World Building: Older is Better

   0

older is better

My favorite trope of world building is by far Older is Better. I love exploring ancient ruins and finding log buried technology. One of my favorite examples of this is the time spanning epic Chrono Trigger. In Chrono Trigger there are these chests, they are rumored to be from an ancient civilization. You'll find them in houses as heirlooms and and in tucked away in corners of the middle ages. since you start in the middle ages these you find the chests again and again. Eventually you travel through time to find that the kingdom of Zeal created the chests, this kingdom was based on magic and was far more advanced the the middle ages you start in. you eventually power up a pendent to unlock the chests. I love this idea that there was powerful lost technology.

older bad-ass weapons are awesome too. It always feels good when you break into a tomb and find THE SWORD OF LEGEND. My favorite example of this is in Fire Emblem Blazing Sword. Where you have to collect the weapons of heroes to fight dragons. I thought this was awesome you went to a tomb, a town and a few other places. the I love the following in the footsteps of previous heroes, who were these heroes? what were they like? Do the new heroes match up to the old ones? I think that one thing games do do enough is reward you for playing previous games. I think that having the ability to fight previous heroes is really cool. Fire Emblem awakening did this right by being set in the future of the first fire emblem game. this meant that the history that the characters talk about is a game I had already played, but it wasn't chained to the previous one since it takes place a thousand years after.

Another awesome example of this is Metal Fatigue an RTS that allows you to build your own mechs. In this game three brothers each run one major corporation. The brothers find an ancient alien mech parts and go to war over the dig sites, and vie for control over these valuable resources. Whats so cool about it is that finding the ancient mechs is organic. every once and a while in a map there's an alien base. most of the time its tucked away in the corner and you have to fight an alien mech so powerful it can take out 3-5 of your mechs, but if you're lucky when you do destroy the mech sometimes it leaves a part. the parts you get for destroying, are far and away better then the parts you can build. unfortunately you only get it for that one mission.

Many other games do this too. I love finding armor on throne or a sword of infinity +1 in some tucked away corner of the game world in some long forgotten city. I hope this trope keeps being a thing for a long time.
