Phils Game/Pop Music Similarities #309 - It Sure Is!

   0

Featuring Final Fantasy X and Folk.

Greetings fellow game music lovers,

Merry Christmas everyone and a happy new year! Another year down and what a year it was. Ten thousands of new songs, the essence of which you see in the blog entries before you. And fitting for the cause, I saved up a special song: Suteki da Ne, the poster song of the still overwhelmingly popular Final Fantasy X (2001)! Let's start with the first part of the song after the intro that starts roughly at the 0:40 mark:

My hypothesis is that this part is basically a more serious version of the song "Long, Long Ago", an english ballad written in 1833 by Thomas Haynes Bayly:

The song is the most famous work of it's author and part of several major english and U.S. american folk songbooks. It's also a regular customer in Folk/Country music.

It should be noted that there are other country/folk songs from the same time with vaguely similar progression.

Now for the main part of the song.

The general tone of the sequence can occasionally be found in country music with a strong gospel streak:

Scepter - "Sweet Harmony" (1982):

For the structure of the melody you occasionally find something comparable in Bluegrass, also usually the ones strongly connected to Gospel:

Doyle Lawson - "Hallelujah in my Heart" (Original 1994):

I had to drop some samples because the one Youtuber who had them lost to copyright strikes. I'm very sorry for that.

I will have to take off a little while for health reasons. See you in the new year!

Phil out.
