When it comes to spooky mounts, it’s hard to get spookier than the Disembodied Head in Final Fantasy XIV. You’ve surely seen a few monsters like this, but riding one around by yourself is, of course, maximum spooky. Thankfully, you can earn this one in-game, and it’s not tied to any particularly tough achievements. However, you will have to grind some specific content to obtain it.
You can get the Disembodied Head mount in Final Fantasy XIV by playing the Palace of the Dead Deep Dungeon. This is a randomized dungeon that you can unlock via the “The House That Death Built” sidequest in New Gridania. As you play Palace of the Dead, you’ll earn a Gelmorran Potsherd every time you clear floor 50, floor 100, or you find a Bronze Coffer. Once you earn 10 Gelmorran Potsherds, you can speak with E-Una-Kotor near the Palace of the Dead entrance and exchange them for the Disembodied Head Resonator. Use this and you’ll receive the Disembodied Head!
The best way to get Gelmorran Potsherds in Final Fantasy XIV
Honestly, if you’re trying to grind these, you just have to run Palace of the Dead over and over. First, clear through floor 100 to finish the dungeon’s corresponding questline. Afterwards I’d suggest running it again starting from floor 51. You’ll earn more EXP here, making this a good opportunity to level alt classes while you go for this mount. Also, you won’t start from level one every time, which should help repeat sessions feel less tedious.
Bronze Coffers are the only chests that drop Gelmorran Potsherds, so don’t worry about full-clearing every floor or going for other chests. If you’re in a matched party, Golden Coffers just drop pomanders that you’ll lose anyway, so don’t prioritize those. Silver Coffers increase your Aetherpool equipment level, so you should open these if you’re still strengthening your armaments. Otherwise, the faster you clear floors, the sooner you’ll get that guaranteed Potsherd upon clearing.
Just make sure you don’t go so fast that you get you or your party killed. It’s easy to trigger a trap or aggro too many monsters, and slow progress is still better than no progress. So just take your time, keep running Palace of the Dead, and you’ll have the Disembodied Head mount before you know it. There are many other rewards you can earn with Gelmorran Potsherds, so prepare to get to know this dungeon really well if you want to earn everything you can.
