During the Warframe Devstream 176, developer Digital Extremes revealed plans for the next big update, Dante Unbound. Scheduled to release in March 2024, the update will bring the 56th Warframe to the popular action RPG MMO.

56th Warframe: Dante, Master of Reality's Pages

The highlight of the new update is of course the new Warframe, Dante. Described as a classic-MMO caster, Dante is accompanied by his own Exalted Weapon, Noctua. A Dante-bound Grimoire, Noctua obliterates enemies by pelting them with spectral pages and cursed paper cuts. I have to admit, being cut up by cursed pages of a magical spellbook sounds pretty brutal.

The living sandstorm Warframe Inaros is also getting a long overdue rework with the update, with full details on the rework to come soon.

Quality-of-life updates and return of TennoGen

TennoGen, a unique system in Warframe comprised of unique customizations created by fellow Warframe players, is finally making a return in the March update. TennoGen is essentially a collaborative program between community artists and Digital Extremes developers to add purchasable cosmetics to the game while sharing revenue with the artists who created them.

The TennoGen system has been updated, and will now accept submissions under the new Entrati style that was added in the recent Whispers in the Walls update that was released in December. Fans will now be able to create Warframe skins, Weapon skins, Operator accessories, Landing Craft skins, and more as part of Tennogen.

Dante looks like a pretty cool caster Warframe, so I'm excited to hear more. The Dante Unbound update for Warframe will release in March 2024.

Warframe announces 2024’s first Void Corruption Alert missions https://www.destructoid.com/warframe-announces-2024s-first-void-corruption-alert-missions/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=warframe-announces-2024s-first-void-corruption-alert-missions https://www.destructoid.com/warframe-announces-2024s-first-void-corruption-alert-missions/#respond Mon, 08 Jan 2024 14:27:48 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=447190

As one of the most player-friendly free-to-play live-service games on the market right now, Warframe has earned its long-lasting tenure for sure. To celebrate 2024, the developer Digital Extremes has announced Warframe's latest set of Void Corruption Alerts, giving players a chance to earn unique mods and bundles of credits.

Void Corruption Alerts aren't a new thing in Warframe, of course. While veteran players may find the content added as part of the recent Whispers in the Walls update more interesting, 2024's first batch of Void Corruption Alerts is still very important both for newcomers and for those who haven't yet filled out their Mod libraries. With Fleeting Expertise, Blind Rage, Transient Fortitude, and a slew of others on offer, now's the time to jump in and earn those mods.

A new round of Warframe Void Corruption Alert missions

Warframe's latest batch of Void Corruption Alerts is going to run over the course of the next couple of weekends. The really important bit is that each Alert will run for a few days at a time, which means that players should have ample opportunities to score the rare mods. Here's the full schedule, as featured in Digital Extremes' official blog post:

  • Weekend #1: January 5 (11 AM ET) - January 8 (11 AM ET), Taranis - Defense (level 10-15), Fleeting Expertise + 30,000 Credits
  • Weekend #2: January 12 (11 AM ET) - January 15 (11 AM ET), Tiwaz - Mobile Defense (level 20-25), Blind Rage + 30,000 Credits
  • Weekend #3: January 19 (11 AM ET) - January 22 (11 AM ET), Ani - Survival (level 20-25), Narrow Minded + 30,000 Credits
  • Weekend #4: January 26 (11 AM ET) - January 29 (11 AM ET), Ukko - Capture (level 30-35), Overextended + 30,000 Credits
  • Weekend #5: February 2 (11 AM ET) - February 5 (11 AM ET), Oxomoco - Exterminate (level 30-35), Transient Fortitude + Stratos Emblem

It's a fine selection of goodies, then, and the Stratos Emblem in particular is a curious addition. Players who are just now getting through Warframe's earliest progression steps may wish to take note, as Corrupted mods could massively improve their load-outs quickly and easily. Of course, to participate in this latest batch of Void Corruption missions, you will need to have them unlocked in the first place, so it's worth planning around these Alerts while you have the time.

Why are Void Corruption Alert missions important?

Void Corruption Alerts are notable specifically because they award the mods outlined above: Fleeting Expertise, Blind Rage, Narrow Minded, Overextended, and Transient Fortitude. Unlike most other mods, these Corrupted mods offer massive bonuses at the cost of specific stat reductions. While this might not sound ideal at a glance, hyper-focusing on particular stats is a very viable strategy in Warframe, and having such mods at hand in case you need them is extremely useful.

An unknown number of employees have been laid off at Warframe developer and Wayfinder publisher Digital Extremes today. According to Polgyon, at least 20 employees in total were let go. It appears Digital Extremes is closing their external projects division which publishes games like the recently Early Access release title Wayfinder. Instead, the company will shift its focus towards internal projects like Warframe and Soulframe.

We reached out to Digital Extremes who confirmed the information and provided the following statement

“We can confirm we have made the difficult decision to cease operations of our external projects division. We have had to say goodbye to a number of hardworking and highly valuable team members as a result.”

The representative also confirmed that Digital Extremes is looking to transfer Wayfinder in its entirety into the hands of the developer, Airship Syndicate.

"“We're working with Airship to transition full control of Wayfinder to them in coming months."

Just a few weeks ago there was a leadership change at Digital Extremes as well, with Chief Creative Officer Steven Sinclair replacing Founder James Schmalz as CEO of the company.

Rough times in the video games industry

These kinds of articles are never easy to write, especially when the video game industry seems to be suffering layoffs several times a week. Just yesterday Embracer Group laid off staff at developer Free Radical, after doing the same just last month at Cryptic Studios and Zen Studios. Ubisoft Montreal also suffered layoffs earlier this week.

This list has grown so big it almost feels easier to name the companies that have not conducted layoffs compared to those that have. According to the website VideoGameLayoffs.com, over 6,500 employees from over 100 companies in the games industry have been laid off this year alone.

In their newest Devstream, Warframe developer Digital Extremes revealed details for the MMO's upcoming Abyss of Dagath update. The update, which will be released on October 18, will add the 54th Warframe to its ranks. The legendary headless horsewoman Dagath can conjure spectral sickles and projectile cursed energy from her faceless head. The appropriately-themed update will be released just in time for Halloween and comes with more content including a Prime form of the Warframe Grendel as well as reworks to companions and the Warframe Hydroid.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hj8lf9cGU0&pp=ygUId2FyZnJhbWU%3D

The 54th Warframe is Dagath, the headless horsewoman

The headless horsewoman Dagath wields a Dorrclave, part sword and part whip. She can also conjure rotating spectral sickles and projectile cursed energy from her faceless head. Dagath has the ability to guard specifically against spectral realm-based damage, and even summon Rakhali's Cavalry, five phantasmal steeds that collide with enemies for massive damage.

I have to admit, this is one of the coolest-looking Warframes in a while. It definitely fits with the spooky nature of the update heading into Halloween.

Grendel Prime and a couple of reworks

The all-devouring Grendel Prime will arrive with the latest Prime Access on October 18. Grendel Prime Access will also feature Prime versions of his signature weapons Masseter Prime as well as Zylok Prime.

Alongside the new Prime, Hydroid, and companions are getting a bit of a rework. Companions are receiving improved vitality and can no longer be permanently defeated during missions. They will instead become incapacitated.

Hydroid is getting improvements to his existing abilities as well as a brand new ability called Plunder. Plunder allows Hydroid to steal armor from enemies within view and convert it to bonus Corrosive weapon damage.

    Two events are already underway

Even though the Abyss of Dagath update doesn't drop until October 18, a couple of community events have already begun. First is the Quest to Conquer Cancer where players can unlock various rewards while raising funds for The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.

The other current event is the Nights of Naberus, which reigns in the spooky season with Halloween-themed cosmetics including masks, armor, skins, and more. A new Naberus Lotus skin is also available during the event.

“Naberus is always a great time of year for Warframe. We have our holiday-themed
54th Warframe, more lore, tons of activities, and quality of life improvements - not to mention
the launch of Grendel’s Prime - no tricks, only treats!”

    - Rebecca Ford, Creative DIrector

Warframe's Abyss of Dagath update comes out on October 18 on all platforms. Players can view patch notes of all the planned changes via the Warframe website.

      Warframe: 1999 may reimagine a classic Digital Extremes game https://www.destructoid.com/warframe-1999-may-reimagine-a-classic-digital-extremes-game/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=warframe-1999-may-reimagine-a-classic-digital-extremes-game https://www.destructoid.com/warframe-1999-may-reimagine-a-classic-digital-extremes-game/#respond Sun, 27 Aug 2023 15:36:50 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=399361

Digital Extremes' Warframe is one of the longest-lasting live-service games on the market, having started its free-to-play romp back in 2013. Some of the game's oldest fans may well remember that DE's sci-fi adventure ambitions started earlier still, with the original concept behind Dark Sector: a game that embodied many of Warframe's core design principles at first, only to eventually be retrofitted into a bog standard (albeit charming) cover-based third-person shooter. Well, Dark Sector has always had more than a few parallels with Warframe proper, and those parallels may be explored in a new context with Warframe: 1999.

Notably, Digital Extremes recently revealed one of Warframe's two upcoming expansions, those being Whispers in the Walls and Warframe: 19991999 is due to launch sometime in 2024, and what's really notable about it is that it appears to take players far, far away from the central conflict of the Sol system. Instead, it is seemingly set in an alternative version of the year 1999.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6NyR1Gfvr8

Is Warframe: 1999 a Dark Sector revival?

Digital Extremes has, historically, never been too concerned about whether the team will stray too far away from Warframe's core lore and gameplay principles. This has resulted in a remarkably layered but also fragmented experience, where not all of the game's features necessarily interact with one another. It's always been a bit strange, then, that the studio chose not to do anything with Dark Sector, short of releasing some of its cosmetics as microtransactions in Warframe.

It's worth pointing out that DE itself hasn't come out and said that 1999 is a re-envisioning of Dark Sector. The similarities, however, are certainly striking. The protagonist of Warframe: 1999 is a mystery man known as Arthur, who is - for whatever reason - fielding the Excalibur bodysuit with an old-school combat harness and other various tidbits of regular, modern-day kit. His enemies? The techno-organic plague, which may or may not have something to do with the mad scientist type (Entrati) who appears at the end of the trailer. The similarities with Dark Sector's Hayden Tenno are impossible to ignore.

Now, it's anyone's guess whether Digital Extremes is actually gunning to reenvision Dark Sector in the context of Warframe's own lore, but that certainly looks like what's going on. Warframe veterans may wish to keep an eye out for 1999, then, as it has the potential of being remarkably interesting to those who enjoy the game's wacky lore.

      Warframe devs confirm cross-progression is finally coming https://www.destructoid.com/warframe-cross-progression-launching-2023/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=warframe-cross-progression-launching-2023 https://www.destructoid.com/warframe-cross-progression-launching-2023/#respond Sun, 27 Aug 2023 14:51:18 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=399364

Tennocon kicked off with a bang, as Warframe developers Digital Eclipse finally confirmed cross-progression was coming to the free-to-play shooter.

While no exact date was announced, cross-progression is coming to Warframe sometime in 2023. The game previously allowed cross-play between consoles and PC players, but saves were bound to each system.

      https://twitter.com/PlayWarframe/status/1695552466824147042?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet

Cross-progression was an often requested feature, and devs confirmed previously that it was in the works. Cross-progression has fortunately become the norm, though that wasn’t always the case. Games like Fortnite and Destiny 2 led the pack by implementing cross-progression, but many games still tie accounts to their original ecosystem.

Why do players want cross-progression in Warframe?

Cross-progression may not feel like a huge deal, but it’s a matter of convenience. From a comfort perspective, it means it’s easier than ever for a Warframe player to move from their computer desk to their couch to continue the game on a console.

But it also opens up gamers to new consoles or making the jump to PC. While cross-play allowed friends to play on any platform, they wouldn’t be able to take that character to another ecosystem. If you started your Warframe career on your PS4 or Xbox One back in the day, you would have to start a new character if you jumped to a different console or PC.

It also is a shot in the arm for Warframe players with Frames they made years ago but friends who started the game on a new system. Attempting to form a party across multiple console and PC ecosystems can be a nightmare, but cross-progression means the whole squad can finally join up on the same system with cross-progression.

Warframe first launched in 2013, but it's actually a spiritual successor to PS3/Xbox 360 shooter Dark Sector. Warframe first launched on PC, with ports released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One shortly after. Since then, it's become one of the most celebrated free-to-play MMOs, thanks to its refined shooter gameplay mixed with energetic movement. Today, the game is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch, as well as the original releases.

      Don't Pay to Play

Gaming can quite quickly become an expensive hobby. The non-stop conga line of fantastic games this year has made it harder than ever to play without hurting your wallet. Not every worthwhile experience has a price tag on it, however. With the following PS5 titles, you'll have a blast without spending a cent.

      10. Apex Legends

When it comes to free-to-play games, fans of first-person shooters have more than enough to pick from. Apex Legends is a battle-royale style game featuring a cast of characters serving as either Recon, Support, Skirmisher, Assault, or Controller. With a good variety of guns and maps, it is a title that easily hooks players for hours at a time.

Yet another first-person shooter appears on the list in the form of Destiny 2. It has managed to remain relevant thanks to constant expansions, including Lightfall in 2023. With Sony's acquisition of Bungie, it appears the franchise will be supported for a long time to come.

The third-person shooter Warframe was first released in 2013, and it has maintained popularity since. It uses a mix of both procedurally generated and fixed levels that have players using guns and stealth. With new expansions regularly released, it's always a good time to start playing Warframe.

It has since developed a competitive scene, though casual players can still easily join at any time. In 2020, it went free-to-play, opening the game to an even wider audience.

Fall Guys launched in August 2020, and it was an immediate record-breaking hit. Though it may not make as many headlines in 2023, Fall Guys is still a silly battle royale game with an active user base. Much like the show Takeshi's Castle, players are tasked with completing an assortment of games and obstacle courses. Little beans are the competitors, which makes things all the more sillier.

The game features gorgeous visuals that reference many classic PlayStation franchises, and the platforming gameplay is both fun and varied. The only wish now is that the PSVR 2 receives a similar title.

There is a good variety of free-to-play games available on PS5, and they'll satisfy fans of sports games, shooters, and platformers. Upcoming free-to-play games to look out for include the soccer game UFC, as well as the MMORPG Throne and Liberty.

Things seem to be getting strange(r) in Warframe

The popular online multiplayer game Warframe is getting its next big piece of content next month. The Duviri Paradox expansion for Warframe arrives in April, bringing its own style of experience to the sci-fi game.

As premiered during today's March Devstream, a teaser showed off some more of the theme and vibe for The Duviri Paradox. The story follows the Drifter, stuck in a shifting and changing world, going up against the Child King ruler Dominus Thrax.

Publisher and developer Digital Extremes is billing this as a roguelike-inspired Open World experience, which will be accessible to both new and old players. You can get a glimpse of what that looks like here:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pl_4SobiEHs

During today's stream, the team also shared more about the different improvements to the Warframe experience and what's in store for this update. Crucially, there are three different game modes you'll be greeted with when kicking off your journey. "The Circuit" will be a new, Warframe Only endless game mode, while "The Duviri Experience" will be a full open world adventure. For those who want some solo story, "The Lone Story" will provide that. You can learn more from the Twitch VOD here.

No date was locked in, just the April window; but more information about The Duviri Paradox and its date will be coming "soon."

      A true paradox

I'm admittedly not a huge Warframe person, though that's mostly from never having played more than a few hours of it. Today's announcement caught my eye, though, with its statement that players new and old could both hop in.

Those who have taken the plunge with Warframe have frequently sung its praises, so an onboard ramp is certainly appealing to me. Plus, a roguelike option in a constantly updating game is curious to me, in and of itself. We'll see just what the paradox holds when The Duviri Paradox hits Warframe sometime next month.

For those who want to celebrate the new content in-person, there's an additional bit of good news: Digital Extremes will be hosting TennoCon in-person later this year on August 26 in London, Ontario.

Get a new frame for free

Digital Extremes' live-service shooter Warframe is celebrating the reveal its 50th Warframe. And in honor of this milestone, that Warframe will be free for a limited time.

Players can add Styanax, the 50th Warframe, to their arsenal for free for a limited time. The new frame will go live in September on all platforms as part of the Veilbreaker update. The new warrior will be available for up to two weeks, after the update launches.

If you're unfamiliar with Warframe, it's a free-to-play live-service shooter where the player can operate different mechanized suits called Warframes. Each one has its own special abilities and design, letting players swap around how they play.

Styanax is inspired by Greek mythology, specifically the warrior Astyanax, the son of Hector. He's a powerful warrior, and a new animated short shows off some of his moves alongside some backstory of the Warframe universe.

      Back in action

The Veilbreaker update will also bring back Grineer Kahl-175 as a playable character, in a new quest following the events of The New War. Here's the description:

"After a curious signal is picked up by Daughter of the Entrati family, the Tenno are contacted to investigate a Murex ship near Deimos and find its source. As Kahl, players will utilize new powerful abilities and tech gained along the way to fight their way through a Sentient onslaught and returning Archon boss enemies aboard the Murex while circumventing their intriguing technology to locate and safely release his brothers from imprisonment."

Veilbreaker will add new customizations and accessories, alongside reworks to various systems. New cosmetics will also be made available, including some Kahl-175 exclusive ones.

Warframe has really stood the test of time, garnering a significant following over the years it's been out. With its 50th Warframe coming next month alongside more content, it's a nice little boon for longtime fans, or a decent way to pick up a new kit if you're starting the game out.

The Veilbreaker update for Warframe will be out on all platforms in September 2022.

Did I get enough buzz words in that headline?

One big issue with writing for Destructoid while also working a full-time job is that it's very difficult to keep up with those games-as-a-service titles I love while also doing all the reviews, previews, and general articles that are of interest to me. It's too easy for these games to fall to the wayside, which is exactly what happened to Warframe about a year ago. Despite the many hours I put into it on Switch, I just couldn't catch up and keep up with everything Digital Extremes was putting out. Hopefully, I'll be better at managing my time when Soulframe launches.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4CT_jYWIG1A

Easily the biggest announcement at Saturday's TennoCon, Digital Extremes whipped an impressively beautiful and cryptic trailer for its Soulframe reveal. Announced as a free-to-play action hybrid-MMORPG that takes place in a fantasy setting, this will be the next original game from Digital Extremes and arguably its biggest undertaking since beginning work on Warframe. In addition to the trailer linked above (which is sadly age-restricted), Digital Extremes also launched the game's website with a few pieces of concept art.

“With Soulframe’s worldbuilding and thematic elements, we are really looking to go back to our childhood favorites and pull inspiration from the elaborate fantasy worlds that we fell in love with growing up,” Soulframe Creative Director Geoff Crookes said in a press release. “Our team is really interested in this idea of nature and humanity colliding and we’ll be exploring a lot of those themes through our own lens while playing with ideas of restoration and exploration.”

While some big names within Digital Extremes are moving over to the Soulframe team, the developer was quick to confirm that it will keep supporting, expanding, and updating its flagship title Warframe.

      Much more for Warframe

Speaking of Warframe, Digital Extremes shared some new details on the highly anticipated Duviri Paradox expansion. Set the release on all platforms this winter, The Duviri Paradox begins a new chapter of the Warframe storyline with an expansive world and a looping day cycle.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxbNAraWhiU

Beyond The Duviri Paradox, Digital Extremes also took time at TennoCon 2022 to reveal Styanax as the 50th Warframe, announce the Veilbreaker update will be coming soon to all platforms, and confirm that Rebecca Ford, the Live Operations & Community Director at Digital Extremes, has taken over as Creative Director for Warframe as Steve Sinclair moves over to Soulframe.

Beyond the Soulframe reveal, my favorite announcement yesterday was the confirmation that community testing will start soon for cross-play. Back when it first launched, I tested the waters of the PlayStation 5 version of Warframe and was completely blown away by how gorgeous the game looked. After putting a few hours into that, it was tough to go back to the just-okay-looking Switch version. The only problem is I put so much time into the game on Switch, I can't bring myself to start from scratch on PS5. That's a big reason why I dropped off it in favor of its competitors. So, the sooner cross-play and cross-progression get here for Warframe, the better.

A New War, different from the old war

TennoCon 2021 is coming up this weekend, with a look at what's ahead for the free-to-play multiplayer game Warframe. Today, Digital Extremes is revealing just what's set to be revealed: an interactive preview of the upcoming expansion, The New War.

The gameplay reveal of The New War expansion will take place during TennoLive, on July 17 at 5 p.m. ET. on the Warframe Twitch channel. There will also be a one-time "interactive preview" event, providing a sneak peek at the new content coming to Warframe. You can check out a teaser of the upcoming expansion below:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6IjR8B5678

Old enemies will be returning as part of The New War, but there will also be some reasons to tune in besides seeing familiar faces. Digital Extremes will be dropping some in-game Warframe goodies, including a Vastilok Gunblade for watching 30 consecutive minutes between 12:30 p.m. ET and 5 p.m. ET, and a Loki Prime Warframe for watching the same length of time during the TennoLive segment. You can find the full schedule and drop info on the TennoCon site.

This year's TennoCon is, much like 2020's event, being held online due to health and safety concerns. But while the pandemic may keep folks apart, there will still be activities for attendees, including an in-game relay event with its own rewards.

TennoCon 2021 will also have its own charity partner, with donations being made to the Unity Project for Relief of Homelessness with funds raised from sales of the TennoCon packs.

I've not played too much Warframe myself, because I can only balance so many live-service games. But as someone who does play other constantly-updating games, the festivities around TennoCon certainly impress from a distance. In-game events are certainly a cool way to bolster the reveal and foster some community in lieu of real-world meet-ups, and the ever-evolving Warframe always seems to have some wild new additions up its sleeves. I mean, they got mechs last year. That rules.

TennoCon 2021 will air live on Twitch this Saturday, July 17.

In-game content, virtual currencies, and XP boosts

The next phase in Sony's Play at Home 2021 giveaway is a bit... unexpected.

After giving out a dozen PS4 titles this year including Ratchet & Clank, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Subnautica, the next freebies are just in-game content rather than more on-the-house full games. It was fun while it lasted, right? Actually, some of you may get decent mileage out of this stuff. Some.

You can grab the following free content and virtual currencies from May 17 at 8:00 a.m. Pacific until June 6 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific:

      • Rocket League: PlayStation Plus Pack – includes four unique customization items including Blue Notch Wheels, Blue Smoke Boost, Blue Rocks Trail, and the Trimpact BL Player Banner.
      • Brawlhalla: Brawlhalla: Play at Home Pack – includes the Rayman Legend Unlock, Sir Rayelot Skin with Axe and Gauntlet Weapon Skins, Shrug Emote, and Grimm Sidekick.
      • Destruction AllStars: 1100 Destruction Points.
      • MLB The Show 21: MLB The Show 21 10 The Show Packs.
      • NBA 2K21: The Play at Home Pack – includes MyTEAM Series 2 Amethyst Damian Lillard, 5,000 MyTEAM Points, and more.
      • Rogue Company: Rogue Company: Play at Home Pack – includes the Kyoto Undercover Ronin Outfit and 200 Rogue Bucks.
      • World of Tanks: Five x1.5 Silver Boosters, five x2 XP Boosters, seven days of Premium Account, and more.
      • World of Warships: Tier III battleship Arkansas, 7 days of Premium Account, and 5x Rare Boosters of all five types.
      • Warframe: Warframe: Starter Bundle – includes 100 Platinum, 100,000 Credits, 7 Day Affinity Booster, Essential Base Damage Mod Bundle, and more.

      And there's a Warzone giveaway from May 20 at 10:00 a.m. Pacific until June 6 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific.

      • Warzone: Five 60-minute Double XP tokens ("accessed exclusively in-game through the Message of the Day").

I feel like the Warframe, Rocket League, and Warzone freebies will be the most enticing around these parts. As someone who keeps up with literally none of these games, I'll be sitting this one out.

Somebody needs to do a cosplay mashup of Octavia Prime and Octavia Spencer

Like many of last year's conventions and trade shows, TennoCon, the yearly event that celebrates all things Warframe, had to go all-digital in 2020 due to Covid-19. Because we're still months, if not years, away from nipping this pandemic in the bud, TennoCon 2021 is following suit as Digital Extremes revealed the streaming event will take place on Saturday, July 17.

Just as it was last year, TennoCon 2021 will be free to all, with multiple panels planned for the day-long stream, as well as a community art show and a cosplay contest. While the full schedule of events has yet to be announced, you can throw down some cash early to buy this year's TennoCon Digital Pack and Merch Pack for $24.99 and $44.99, respectively. A bundle of both packs is also available for $64.99, but it can only be redeemed on PC.

This year's charity partner for the event has also been announced. Digital Extremes will make a donation to the Unity Project for Relief of Homelessness with funds raised by the sale of its TennoCon packs. The Unity Project provides emergency housing and shelter for people of all genders age 18 and up in London, Ontario, Canada.

Other platforms will have to wait

It's been nearly eight years since Warframe first arrived on the scene and the game just continues to grow. Not only has developer Digital Extremes added a plethora of new content over the years, but it's also started to go back and revamp old content. We've seen this already with remasters of old tilesets that improve the look of some of the original areas of the game, but today's update is reworking old content in a different way.

The "Corpus Proxima & The New Railjack" update, now available on PC, is reimagining how space battles in the looter shooter work. The Railjack was first added to Warframe in 2019 and has been going through changes since. With today's update, many of the roadblocks keeping players from having a Railjack have been removed. For starters, players will no longer need a Drydock or Dojo to own a Railjack. According to Digital Extremes COO Sheldon Carter, the change came about because of player feedback, saying, "You told us straight up, 'give us more control and streamline the experience' and this update is built with that input in every aspect."

Railjack mission will now also be integrated with Warframe's core gameplay and reward loops, meaning there will be less grind separating you from owning your own ship. If you enjoyed blasting yourself into an enemy ship with your Archwing, you'll still be able to do that in this new update.

All of these changes are in preparation for the launch of "Call of the Tempestarii," the next major Warframe update that will release this spring on all platforms and introduce the game's next 'frame: Sevagoth.

For more information about the changes coming to the Railjack system, check out this video below. "Corpus Proximo & The New Railjack" is now available on PC and will launch on consoles in the coming weeks.

How Taylor Swift and Janet Jackson helped inspire Warframe’s Octavia Prime https://www.destructoid.com/how-taylor-swift-and-janet-jackson-helped-inspire-warframes-octavia-prime/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=how-taylor-swift-and-janet-jackson-helped-inspire-warframes-octavia-prime https://www.destructoid.com/how-taylor-swift-and-janet-jackson-helped-inspire-warframes-octavia-prime/#respond Tue, 23 Feb 2021 23:00:00 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/how-taylor-swift-and-janet-jackson-helped-inspire-warframes-octavia-prime/

We are a part of the Warframe nation

I have to hand it to the developers who work on popular games-as-a-service titles. It takes a lot of work to keep content interesting and players interested. Some rely on outside nostalgia to rope people in. Others look inward for opportunities to excite their massive player bases by breathing new life into popular existing content.

For the looter-shooter Warframe, that means reimagining Warframes with new Prime designs. Some are fairly simple upgrades of their original concept, like the Excalibur Prime. Others are a bit more involved, like 2019's Ivara Prime.

My current go-to Warframe is Hydroid Prime, which I got during TennoCon last year. Within two weeks of adding him to my arsenal, he replaced Wisp as my lead 'frame, not only because he's incredibly useful in battle, but I also just really dig his Davy Jones-inspired look.

Hydroid Prime debuted in 2017 and was designed by Digital Extremes artist Raymond dela Cruz. That same year, Octavia made her debut and quickly became one of the more popular 'frames in the game. It was only a matter of time before she got her own Prime redesign, and the developers gave dela Cruz the task of reimagining Warframe's bard.

"I really like the original design," dela Cruz said in a Google Meet interview with Destructoid. "It was designed by the original art director (Michael Brennan), and I thought it was just superb. So I just wanted to enhance it basically and decided to go with a marching band theme, but with more aspects of dance added into it."

In picturing a marching-band-themed Warframe, dela Cruz started with pictures of the majorettes and baton twirlers you often see when marching bands perform. But the design needed more than just that. It needed a hook, and dela Cruz found one in one of music's biggest stars.

"I needed a sort of inspiration or image of what I wanted to get across," he explained, " and the first thing that came to my mind was actually -- and this is pretty funny -- it was Taylor Swift because she has worn a marching band costume in multiple videos."

That marching band aesthetic is something Swift has routinely included in her performances. She's sported variations of the uniform in videos for "You Belong With Me" and "Me!," and has incorporated the look into various television appearances and her Fearless tour. Plus, most of her songs actually sound pretty damn good when played by a marching band.

      Warframe Octavia Prime

With a starting point of Taylor Swift on his mind, dela Cruz began to figure out how to translate a fun, dancy marching band concept into a Warframe.

"When I started blocking out the model in the concept phase, I realized I needed something more distinct. So I thought of other pop-culture references, and soon enough, I was picturing Janet Jackson's 'Rhythm Nation.' She sort of looks like a marching band leader, so I was really inspired by her outfit in the video, like the hoop earrings, her hat, the shape of her jacket, and the medals on her chest. Even her hair."

If you're at all familiar with the "Rhythm Nation" music video and Octavia's core design, you can begin to see its inspiration almost immediately. For me, it was the sharpness of the shoulder plates on the Prime that connected it to the Janet Jackson ensemble. Compared to the original Octavia, her Prime variant is a lot more militaristic, a real no-bullshit kind of design.

While that probably would have been all the inspiration dela Cruz needed, he pushed himself further and really embraced Octavia's musical nature.

      Warframe Octavia Prime

"I didn't want to just make an obvious representation of her outfit. I wanted to mix in more flavors and even musical instruments into it. So if you look at her hoop earrings carefully, they sort of look like tambourines."

The earrings can be a bit hard to see, but a far more blatant depiction of a musical instrument on Octavia Prime is found on her torso. Three lines stretch up from her midriff to her neck as though they're the strings on a Shawzin.

"That started out because usually, the way it works with Primes is I look at what the default models will give me as far as shape goes, and it just seemed like it had the shape of a cello. I wanted to have something to put in the middle for the players to focus on, like an ornament or something. So I started with the bridges on a cello and put those on the surface almost like buttons, and then I thought 'Why not put on strings to go through it?' Then I started looking for more cello references and added tuners to her design. If you look at the helmet, you can see I put a scroll on it like you find on a cello."

Cello references can be found on other parts of her body as well, but dela Cruz didn't want to limit Octavia Prime to just classical instruments. After all, she's launching alongside the new hip-hop-inspired, bass-heavy Bombast Instruments Pack for her Mandachord. On her thighs are ornate circular plates that mimic the speakers of a boombox, a design that can be found scattered across her body. These are present on the original Octavia, but here, they're a lot more pronounced.

Not every instrument dela Cruz included is represented so clearly, though. Some had to be toned down to keep them from overwhelming the whole design.

"Originally, when I was working on it, I did model out an actual kalimba, which is this African instrument. When I was putting it on the model, it felt like there was too much detail, and it was distracting from the rest of the parts. So I did make a simplified version that eventually went on the side. It looks more like a button, but before, it was elaborate. Like you could actually see the individual tines."

      Warframe Octavia Prime

Octavia Prime will be available starting today at 11:00 am PT across all platforms. Along with the new 'frame, Octavia Prime Access will include the Bombast Instruments Pack, the gorgeous Aristei Prime Shawzin, Tenora Prime Rifle, Pandero Prime Pistol, the Serenedine Syandana, Octavia's signature armor and glyphs, and mods that allow for more customization options.

I expect to see a lot of players grooving as Octavia Prime over the next couple of months and look forward to seeing what some of the more prolific Mandachord musicians make with that new beat-heavy instrument pack. At the very least, I'm sure YouTuber Buff00n will be able to crank out more dope-ass hits with it. As for dela Cruz, he's already started work on his next Warframe redesign. Unfortunately, that's all he could tell me, and we're just going to have to wait and see which 'frame he'll give the Prime treatment to next.

Log in now for some love

Today's Epic Games Store Spring Showcase was a bit of a mixed bag as it had a couple of huge bits of news that have dominated the conversation mixed in with a lot of updates on games you're probably well familiar with. Warframe, which launched on the Epic Games Store late last year, had just a moment in the spotlight during the stream and used the opportunity to showcase what's coming up in the next few weeks for players. Not only are we getting a new Warframe, but one fan favorite is getting reintroduced in their Prime form.

Octavia, who first appeared back in 2017, will make her Prime debut on February 23 on all available platforms. Octavia Prime will come equipped with Prime versions of her Tenora and Pandero weapons, as well as a Shawzin Prime.

I never really wrapped my head around the Shawzin, so I don't know if I'll be adding Octavia Prime to my collection. However, Sevagoth, the 46th Warframe, is definitely a must-have for me. The ghostly 'Frame is set to debut later this spring with the "Call of the Tempestarii" update that'll add new Railjack battles to the game.

While those additions will have to wait, starting today, you can begin taking part in the Star Days event to earn some stylish wings and more. Check out Ticker's booth on Fortune between now and February 24 to claim those rewards. From February 15 through March 6, the game will be celebrating Lunar New Year with limited-time rewards.

      Consider it mecha month

I don't need a reason to return to Warframe as I still think it's the best game to wake up to on the weekends, but if I had been shying away from it, a new event kicking off today would absolutely draw me back in. "Operation: Orphix Venom" is the first all-mech event in Warframe, challenging players to beat back a massive onslaught of Sentient forces using mechs rather than their 'Frames. Last month, PC players got their shot at it, and today, console players will get to see how well they can fight against these foes.

Up to four players can team up to tackle the mission, even if they haven't played far enough into Warframe to earn their mechs. Anyone who joins in the first three weeks will also receive double affinity. Complete the operation, and you'll walk away with the 45th Warframe known as Lavos.

"Operation: Orphix Venom" is available for console players starting today through February 22.

      'Creatively independent'

Tencent, a stupidly massive Chinese conglomerate, got a little bigger recently. It added Leyou's assets to its portfolio thanks to a new acquisition.

Leyou likely isn't a name you recognize, but some of its studios will ring a bell. Most notable, Leyou is the parent company of Digital Extremes, which is the developer of Warframe. That's right -- the free-to-play darling Warframe is now a Tencent property.

Following the acquisition, Digital Extremes has been quick to insist that this will affect nothing as far as Warframe's direction is concerned. In a post on its site, Digital Extremes says "We will remain creatively independent ... Tencent is well known for respecting the creative decisions and integrity of its studios, and for giving them the autonomy and independence to experiment, innovate and thrive."

As for the future of Warframe, Digital Extremes gives a few specifics. The developer says it's "focused on expanding on next-generation consoles (Xbox Series X/S), innovating with The New War, forging ahead with intense space battles (Corpus Railjack), and more surprises in 2021." Also, Digital Extremes will work with Tencent to bring the Chinese version of Warframe up to speed with the western version.

The Tencent takeover touches more teams than just Digital Extremes. This buyout includes Splash Damage (Gears Tactics developer), Athlon Games, Kingmaker, Radiance, and 20 percent of Certain Affinity (co-developer of Halo Infinite).

      For new and current players

Digital Extremes' Warframe is closing in on its eighth year of operation and it is showing no signs of slowing down. The looter-shooter launched last month on the PlayStation 5, and an Xbox Series X version is in the works as well. However, before that happens, Warframe is making its way to the Epic Games Store, and it's bringing some goodies along with it.

Starting today through Christmas Eve, new and current players who open or sign into an Epic Games Store account and download the game from the service will receive three guns skins modeled after popular weapons from Unreal Tournament

The skins are part of the Unreal Tournament Weapon Bundle that includes:

      • Flak Cannon Skin
      • Rocket Launcher Skin
      • Shock Rifle Skin
      • Drakgoon Weapon w/ Slot
      • Ogris Weapon w/ Slot
      • Stahlta Weapon w/ Slot
      • Essential Critical Chance Bundle
      • Affinity Booster

Players who download from the Epic Game Store will also unlock the Synkra Syandana.

If this mash-up of Unreal Tournament and Warframe sounds a bit out of left field, you should know there is some history between Digital Extremes and Epic. The two companies go way back to when Digital Extremes was still making pinball games and Epic was called Epic MegaGames. James Schmalz, founder and CEO of Digital Extremes, actually developed the initial prototype for what would eventually become Unreal and the far more popular Unreal Tournament. The partnership between Schmalz's Digital Extremes and Tim Sweeny's Epic lasted all the way through Unreal Tournament 2004. There is a great, extensive interview with Schmalz by Danny O'Dwyer of Noclip that covers the history of Digital Extremes and the early years of the Unreal franchise.

In case you're wondering if this is going to be a Rocket League-type situation, know that Warframe is not leaving Steam just because it's coming to Epic Games Store. Same goes for the WF.com launcher. As for console players, it does not look like these Unreal Tournament skins will be coming our way, but with the recent launch of the Deimos: Arcana update, there is plenty of reason to dive back into the world of space ninjas.

      November 26

As promised, Warframe is coming to PS5 before Xbox Series X/S. How soon? Well, very soon! Developer Digital Extremes has just revealed the full launch date for the PS5 version: Thursday, November 26.

Naturally, since this is a free-to-play game, you'll be able to download the upgrade for free without paying a fee. On PS5, this version of Warframe will sport 4K visuals at 60 FPS, also making use of the DualSense adaptive triggers. In other words, all of the bells and whistles of early "next [current]-gen."

Digital Extremes also took the opportunity to clarify some of your burning questions. Cross-save between PS4 and PS5 is available, and PS4 and PS5 users can play together. The studio also says that they are not allowing account migration from "any platforms at this time."

They're planning a Booster Pack V if you pick up the PS5 edition and have PlayStation Plus, which comes with a seven-day affinity booster, a seven-day credit booster, 100,000 credits, and 100 Platinum. You can also net a few goodies (Paracesis Obsidian Skin, Obsidian Monast Sugatra, a fully-built Forma and a 3-Day Resource Booster) if you log in before December 2 at 2PM ET to celebrate the PlayStation anniversary.

Trophies will also have to be re-unlocked on PS5. Strangely, trophies that require you to do a task a certain number of times will be auto-propelled to 99% if you've already unlocked that trophy; but quest-related ones will need to be completely re-earned It's all part of the sometimes messy PlayStation family migration experience.

As a note, an Xbox Series X version is planned, but there is no word on when it might actually arrive.

Experience the next generation on November 26 [Warframe]

Xbox Series X owners will have to wait

The most frequent I've asked in my various talks with the developers of Digital Extremes is, "Do you have any information on the next-gen versions of Warframe for me?" As the world crept closer to the launch of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, I kept at it, dying to know how a game that looks so good on the Switch would look with the power of next-gen technology.

But they never had an answer for me. "Nothing to announce on next-gen platforms," they'd say. In fact, they'd act like it wasn't even in their plans. After getting shut down multiple times, I thought maybe Warframe wouldn't see enhancements for next-gen consoles until a few months after release. Turns out, I thought wrong.

Any Warframe players planning on picking up a PS5 will be happy to know Digital Extremes has confirmed the looter shooter will launch this year on the console with an Xbox Series X/S version planned for sometime after. If you like the look of the game on your PS4 already, get ready to see just how much better it can be.

Those load times send a shiver up my spine. According to Digital Extremes, Warframe on next-gen consoles will run in 4K at 60fps. All that bright, dynamic lighting you saw in the trailer is the result of the game's Enhanced Renderer. Not only does this improve the light across the many planets of the Solar System, but it enhances their colors as well.

If you're planning on jumping into the next generation right out the gate but your friends aren't, Digital Extremes has confirmed there is cross-play and cross-save between the PS5 and PS4. The game will also utilize some of the unique features of the console, like the adaptive triggers of the DualSense controller, to further enhance the experience.

To mark the impending release, Digital Extremes has released a new booster pack that's free for PS+ subscribers. Whether you're playing on PS4 or starting with PS5, if you pay for PlayStaiton+, you'll be able to download the DualSense-inspired Sedai Obsidian Syandana, an experience booster, in-game currency booster, credits, and premium credits.

Warframe is available now as a free-to-play title on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.

Explore this gross moon of Mars

Digital Extremes planned for its open-world Heart of Deimos update to hit all platforms at the same time, but after hitting a snag with Switch certification, the developer went ahead and released it on PC, PS4, and Xbox One on August 25. Today, Switch Tenno like myself are finally able to get in on the action as the update is set to hit the console this afternoon.

Heart of Deimos is the third open-world map for the popular looter shooter and it introduces a whole score of new features for Warframe, including mechs you can pilot, a Helminth you can feed, and the game's 44th Warframe, Xaku.

If you want to access the Heart of Deimos and make mother proud, you'll need to complete the Mars Junction first. Warframe is now available on PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Switch.

The mean grey mother from outer space

The Heart of Deimos is going to make for one hell of an introduction for players new to the Warframe experience, but for those who have been playing since the beginning, a new feature coming soon to your Orbiter may allow you to customize your playing experience even more. When Heart of Deimos launches at the end of August, your infirmary will have a new occupant. Say hello to Audrey II Helminth.

      Warframe Helminth

Currently, the infirmary can only be accessed when you're playing as the Nidus Warframe or if any other 'frame has a cyst. With the update on August 25, you'll get full access to the room anytime you want to take advantage of the Chrysalis System, a new feature that'll let you further customize your favorite Warframes so long as you're not opposed to getting rid of some you've already earned.

The system works like this: pick a Warframe with an Ability you want, sacrifice it to the Helminth, feed it what it needs, and then say goodbye to that Warframe and hello to an Ability you can put on any other Warframe you have. As you can only have four Abilities on a Warframe, you'll have to get rid of one Ability innate to the 'frame that's receiving this new power. However, you can keep any removed Abilities on alternate configurations.

It's not just discarded Warframes that'll grant you new abilities. As you level up Helminth, you'll gain access to exclusive Helminth Abilities. There are some limitations to the system. First of all, only one added Ability can be on a Warframe at any given time. Second, each Warframe will have a specific Ability that can be fused with other 'frames. Finally, if you have a Prime Warframe and are worried about accidentally sacrificing one of those, Digital Extremes promises the Chrysalis System will only accept non-Prime Warframes.

      Kick-ass community created concept

Earlier this year, Digital Extremes asked Tenno around the world to submit their ideas for a new Warframe in the fantastically popular free-to-play looter shooter. Plenty of ideas were submitted, but the most popular entry by far was from a user named 'eaterofstorms" who pushed the idea of a Broken Warframe, one that is, "obviously not put together correctly and it's pretty much the epitome of making a bug a feature."

An absolutely dope idea that finally has a dope design. Say hello to Xaku, a gender-neutral Warframe coming to the game with the launch of the Heart of Deimos.

That is an incredible design that came together quite quickly given everything happening in 2020. Xaku is constructed from fallen Warframes that fell victim to the Void. Xaku's four Abilities were also decided by the community and pull their power from the Void itself. Its signature weapons is the equally dope-looking Broken Warfan.

Xaku will be available in Warframe on all platforms alongside the Heart of Deimos update on August 25.

      Arrives on August 25

Last year at TennoCon, Digital Extremes teased a new open-world area known as the Duviri Paradox. That update for Warframe is currently on hold. Instead, more than 50 million players around the world will get access to a new open-world later this month called the Heart of Deimos.

Deimos is the second moon of Mars that holds the origin to the Infested. As players complete quests across the satellite, they'll uncover the mysteries of the nauseating creatures and how they came to be. During a pre-TennoCon presentation, we were given a look at this fleshy world overrun with some of the most gruesome creatures Warframe has ever seen.

      Warframe Heart of Deimos

Heart of Deimos will be the third open-world setting for Warframe, following Fortuna and the Plains of Eidolon. Players will be able to use some of the features they may have already unlocked in the game on Deimos, including Archwings and K-Drives, the latter of which have new Infested forms on the planet. K-Drive combat will also be possible using your secondary weapon with the Heart of Deimos update. Not only will Tenno be exploring the surface of Deimos, but also its crimson underground via procedurally generated tunnels.

They'll also be able to explore it in a Necramech, or what we called it during the presentation, a "Corpse Gundam." These are powerful mechs developed by the Entrati family on Deimos in their fight against the Infested. Digital Extremes says it plans on having the mechs usable on the two other open-world areas as well. Players can access these mechs at any time if they have completed The Second Dream quest. For players who haven't got that far in the questline yet, there will be missions on Deimos that give them temporary access to these mechs. Necramechs are customizable, but they're not on the planet just for your use. Some are still activated and will try to kill you should you cross their path.

      Warframe Heart of Deimos

Despite the heavy infestation, Deimos has some of the extracurricular activities of the other open-world settings, including fishing and conservation. With its orbit around Mars, this moon will be accessible by players fairly early in the game, so Digital Extremes has created a new cinematic player introduction to go along with the update. Deimos will also have a fast-travel system that was designed for previous content releases but is only now being implemented into the game.

Many part of Deimos stood out during this short showcase. The Sun Worm and Moon Worm, both locked in an eternal battle for domination, are breathtaking. The world feels alive and the way it moves and pulses reminded me greatly of Inferno from Bayonetta 2. The creature design here is excellent as well with the massive Bone Blade enemies standing out as pure nightmare fuel. K-Drive combat is a very welcomed addition, though this probably means I should find a better secondary weapon. For players hoping to expand their Warframe arsenal, blueprints for the community-designed Xaku will be found on Deimos.

      Warframe Heart of Deimos

The Heart of Deimos update will launch for Warframe on August 25. For the first time in the game's history, it will debut simultaneously on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch. If you're wondering about the game's availability on next-gen consoles, you'll have to keep wondering. Digital Extremes' COO Sheldon Carter had no information on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X ports of the game.

      That's one salty sea captain

Like many other gaming events this summer, TennoCon 2020 has gone all-digital. Originally planned for July 11, it was pushed back a few weeks to August 1 and today, Digital Extremes has released some snippets of information of what fans can expect to see at this year's show. Not only will Warframe be getting an awesome Hydroid Prime suit (Editor Note: The suit has actually been in the game since 2017 and is not new. I apologize for the error.) which you can see in the gallery below, but we'll get the full reveal of the new area, Heart of Deimos, at this year's show.

If you want that Hydroid Prime Warframe, all you have to do is watch TennoLive on Twitch. Doing so will also net you the Athodai Hand Cannon firearm. All players need to do is link their Warframe account to their Twitch account and watch the show for 30 minutes.

As a reminder, digital and merch packs for TennoCon 2020 are currently up for sale. A portion of proceeds will benefit Autism Ontario London and the Alzheimer Society London and Middlesex.
