All good things must come to an end

Welcome back! It is a new Tuesday, which means tonight there will be a new episode of Spot Dodge Podcast exclusively on Destructoid. Topics: With the controversy around the web regarding Sony possibly remaking/remastering Horizon Zero Dawn, I thought it'd be fun to do a roundtable discussion about what our favorite and actually necessary remakes/remasters have been throughout the years.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PCnrUEKnKg&ab_channel=Destructoid

Sony's new obsession

The discussion around 2013's The Last of Us remake hasn't stopped since Sony revealed it. Many gamers deem it totally unnecessary. Now, as mentioned above, Sony is rumored to be remaking 2017's Horizon Zero Dawn. A much newer and even more unnecessary game to remake. The extremity of this remake/remaster is still a mystery -- It's said to receive updated character models, textures, and lighting. Akin to the aforementioned Last of Us Part 1. Needless to say, it's not a very good look for Sony. And brings the company's creative investments into question.

Sony is squeezing its beloved AAA titles dry, which makes sense, these games are largely unmatched and it wants as many gamers as possible to buy/play them. But while extracting as much value from them as possible, the company keeps making boneheaded decisions like charging $70 for The Last of Us Part 1 with no upgrade path for those who bought the game once or twice before.

With all that said, Sony's slate of previously released "masterpieces" is running low -- There aren't many gems left that wouldn't need an entire retooling in the modern era. Bloodborne and God of War (2018) are the final options that come to mind. So even if the company does continue to go down this road, it won't be for much longer.

Our lovely cast from around the web: Brett Medlock (me) and Mary Stowe from Destructoid, John Friscia from The Escapist, Greg Bargas from PC Invasion, and Brett Larsen, our extra special guest. Behind the scenes, we have Gamur’s Eric Weichhart live-editing the show.

Spot Dodge: A Live Nintendo Podcast discusses the most underrated or overlooked games

Welcome back! It is a new Tuesday, which means tonight there will be a new episode of Spot Dodge: A Live Nintendo Podcast exclusively on Destructoid. Topics: Tonight on Spot Dodge the crew discusses some of the most underrated or overlooked games ever released. One of the games at the top of my list is The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.

While the initial reception of Twilight Princess was very positive, earning a 95/100 average score on Metacritic at the time of launch, I've noticed over the years quite a lot of gamers have soured on the game as a whole. Whether it be gaming threads across social media or the various podcasts I consume, Twilight Princess has sorta become an afterthought for many Zelda fans.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRQps8dg7Qo&ab_channel=Destructoid

But why?

After Nintendo decided to go the cel-shaded and more kid-friendly route with The Wind Waker, players were clamoring for a more mature Zelda title. Then, when Twilight Princess was revealed, it was an epic moment in gaming history. Gamers rejoiced at the sight of the grim and brooding version of Hyrule in Twilight Princess.

However, years later, despite being a more "mature" Zelda title and the amazing critical reception, the game just isn't looked back on super fondly nowadays. Maybe it's the boring drag first few hours of the game that stuck with people the most or the poorly-aged art direction. Either way, I can't help but feel like Twilight Princess is underappreciated in 2022. It's a top-tier Zelda title thanks to its amazing dungeon design, genius new items, and disturbing iteration of Hyrule. Let's discuss!

Spot Dodge: A Live Nintendo Podcast discusses the brilliance of Nintendo's first-party output

Welcome back! It is a new Tuesday, which means tonight there will be a new episode of Spot Dodge: A Live Nintendo Podcast exclusively on Destructoid. Topics: Today on Spot Dodge the crew discusses Nintendo’s downright unmatched game release cadence as a publisher.

Nintendo is one of the very few publishers that seem to work way ahead of schedule — the company has been known to “sit on” fully completed games until it can find an open slot to put them in its release schedule. Not only is that almost unheard of in today’s gaming economy, but most publishers are quick to release games before they’re done cooking. We’ve seen it time and time again — Battlefield 2042, Halo Infinite, No Man’s Sky, Cyberpunk 2077, and the list goes on and on.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e351ykURhWg

While not every game Nintendo publishes is for everyone, there's no denying the company has kept a steady stream of notable games coming over the last few years. It will be interesting to see if Nintendo can keep up this cadence leading into inevitable new hardware.

Spot Dodge: A Live Nintendo Podcast discusses the latest leaks regarding Grand Theft Auto VI

Welcome back! It is a new Tuesday, which means tonight there will be a new episode of Spot Dodge: A Live Nintendo Podcast exclusively on Destructoid. Topics: Tonight, we’re treading in "Nontendo" waters discussing the Grand Theft Auto VI leak and how leaks generally affect games and marketing. An undercooked early look at a megapopular IP is extremely rare, so there's much to discuss!

https://youtu.be/iqSigrevCmg

GTA VI pre-alpha footage leaked early which has made it more obvious than ever that most gamers don't have a base understanding of how games are made. In the leaked footage GTA VI is buggy, runs poorly, and lacks finished models — understandably! The footage was stolen and showcased in the most unflattering way imaginable, with code pop-ups galore. Unfortunately, many gamers fail to understand what that actually means. A lot of reactions are ridiculing the visual fidelity and unfinished assets of the game, rather than the more impressive elements extracted from the leaked footage.

The early clips show us GTA VI will feature extremely dynamic NPC interactions and a great deal of car customization that is rare for even a dedicated racing game. It's also important to note that some of the footage is said to be as old as 2019. If that is the case, there's no doubt the game should be in a much better state today — maybe even officially revealed sooner than we expect?

Spot Dodge: A Live Nintendo Podcast discusses the latest Nintendo Direct!

Welcome back! It is a new Tuesday, which means tonight there will be a new episode of Spot Dodge: A Live Nintendo Podcast exclusively on Destructoid. Topics: Tonight, we’re discussing all the recent announcements from the Nintendo Direct this morning.

Breath of the Wild 2 finally has a real name with The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. To many gamers' surprise, Pikmin 4 was revealed. Fire Emblem Engage is coming on January 20 and it has a lengthy trailer with tons to speculate on. Then, we saw It Takes Two for Switch, Octopath Traveler II, new N64 games for Nintendo Switch Online, and tons more.

The Direct was jam-packed with a lot of cool-looking titles, but I can't help but feel slightly disappointed. I thought the showing of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was way too short. It's nice we finally have a name but how many times is Nintendo going to show 20-seconds of footage for this title? I also thought the show was missing some big hitters like a first look at Metroid Prime 4, a dormant Nintendo IP return, or one of the various rumored titles for Switch. All-in-all, a very solid showing — I was just a little letdown. Let's discuss!

Welcome back! It is a new Tuesday, which means tonight there will be a new episode of Spot Dodge: A Live Nintendo Podcast exclusively on Destructoid. Topics: Tonight, we’re discussing the rumors surrounding Zelda: Twilight Princess and The Wind Waker finally making it to Nintendo Switch. Aside from that, we speculate more on Breath of the Wild 2 and if the Zelda IP is about to make a big splash on Switch in the next year.

Jeff Grubb recently stated on his Nintendo podcast that a source told him Nintendo is planning a Direct during the week of Sep 12. He also mentioned the very high likelihood of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess being announced for Nintendo Switch during the showcase. I think these ports are long overdue and I'd love to play these on Switch leading up to the highly anticipated Breath of the Wild 2. If these rumors are to be believed, we're about to have a bevy of new Zelda titles on Switch!

Breaking Bad creator wanted a game adaptation in the style of GTA https://www.destructoid.com/breaking-bad-creator-wanted-a-game-adaptation-in-the-style-of-gta/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=breaking-bad-creator-wanted-a-game-adaptation-in-the-style-of-gta https://www.destructoid.com/breaking-bad-creator-wanted-a-game-adaptation-in-the-style-of-gta/#respond Wed, 10 Aug 2022 20:00:11 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=338995 Breaking Bad GTA style game

GTA and Breaking Bad would be a match made in heaven

Breaking Bad is widely regarded as one of the best TV series of all time, and frankly, its subject matter would make for a great game. The show's creator Vince Gilligan thought so too, because he at one point pitched a GTA-like adaptation of the iconic series. Originally reported by ComicBook, Gilligan expressed the interest he had in turning Breaking Bad into a game on a recent episode of his podcast "Inside The Gilliverse," where he was accompanied by Eric Broadbent and Peter Gould.

Gilligan said that he's "not much of a video game player," but that he wanted to reach out to the studio that owns Grand Theft Auto and see if they could make "like a module" inspired by his series. Even for someone who doesn't know games all that well, he might be onto something with a Breaking Bad x GTA DLC.

"There have been quite a few attempts at video games," Gilligan continued. "Some of them kinda sort of made it to market. We tried to do a VR experience with the Sony PlayStation VR headset. We did a mobile game that lasted for a little while." He's referring to a narrative base-builder game that was released back in 2020 called Breaking Bad: Criminal Elements, but it didn't last longer than a year.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVpGPX_Lj64&t=3069s

Gilligan also shared the sentiment that the team behind Breaking Bad didn't want to create a bad game that only drew players because of its association with the show, specifically referencing the colossal failure of the 1982 E.T. game for the Atari as something they wanted to avoid replicating.

I honestly find it impressive that conversations are still swirling about adapting Breaking Bad into a game — it speaks to the legacy the show has built nearly a decade after it went off the air.

Spot Dodge brings together awesome gaming minds from around the web. Aside from myself in the hosting chair, my co-hosts will include Mary Stowe (Destructoid, social media manager), John Friscia (The Escapist, senior editor), and Greg Bargas (PC Invasion, writer). Special guest Brett Larsen will also appear on the show, keeping it real with his outside-gaming-industry insight — a perspective I feel many gaming podcasts are lacking. Enthusiast Gaming’s incredible Eric Weichhart will be on the 1s and 2s live-editing the show based on the topics at hand.

But this is just the beginning! I plan to have a slew of awesome creators, developers, and cool guests join in and discuss the unpredictable company that is Nintendo.

Spot Dodge: A Live Nintendo Podcast originally began as a show over at Nintendo Enthusiast, and we're excited to transition it over to Destructoid. We hope you join us on this exciting new adventure!

New Breath of the Wild 2 details may have been leaked by one of the series’ voice actors https://www.destructoid.com/new-breath-of-the-wild-2-details-may-have-leaked-by-one-of-the-series-voice-actors/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=new-breath-of-the-wild-2-details-may-have-leaked-by-one-of-the-series-voice-actors https://www.destructoid.com/new-breath-of-the-wild-2-details-may-have-leaked-by-one-of-the-series-voice-actors/#respond Tue, 03 May 2022 21:00:28 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=319963

At this point, we'll take what we can get

Zelda fans beware: what follows could contain some light spoilers for Breath of the Wild 2.

Breath of the Wild 2 was announced just shy of three years ago, and we haven't learned all that much more about the game since then. Nintendo has been notoriously tight-lipped about the whole thing, but we've gotten a small hint from one of the series' voice actors after he spoke on a podcast for the fan site Lega Hyrule — specifically Pietro Ubaldi, who does the Italian dub of the Goron Champion Daruk, as well as Daruk's Goron ancestor.

As originally reported by Eurogamer, Ubaldi revealed on the podcast that he is returning to the series, and has recorded new lines for both of these characters. That's all we got from the exchange, but it's more than enough to go on for die-hard Breath of the Wild fans. Naturally, theories have already started popping up online, tying into those that already existed from the information we got in previous trailers.

Breath Of The Wild 2 Actor May Have Revealed New Story Details

An already widely accepted theory is that Breath of the Wild 2 will take place an entire thousand years before the events of its predecessor, and now based on this interview, fans are speculating about what a return of the previous Champion characters and their ancestors could look like. Some think that we could be seeing the Champions in flashbacks only, similar to the first Breath of the Wild, while others believe that they will be featured as being in another time period altogether. Regardless of how they're featured, I'll be happy to see them again, because I really happen to love the Champion characters.

While Ubaldi may have given us a little tiny hint about what Breath of the Wild 2's story might have in store for us, we still know very little about the game's setting, as well as any new additions to the game's core mechanics. We still have so much to look forward to, but I'll take any new info I can get — it's the only thing keeping me going at this point.

Frequency listed on back of CD case

Just like every other person on the planet who isn't me, Hideo Kojima has launched a brand new podcast series — As reported by VGC, the new show is titled "Hideo Kojima's Radioverse" and is exclusive to the Amazon Audible service. Naturally, the show is only available in its original Japanese language.

"Hideo Kojima, a game designer who continues to create new ways to play, has created a new show on Amazon Audible," reads the official blurb for the Hideo Kojima's Radioverse podcast. "Each episode will feature a variety of guests who will have in-depth discussions on topics like games and movies, which you can’t hear anywhere else."

The first episode of Radioverse sees the eccentric Metal Gear creator chatting with "2BRO", a popular Japanese YouTube channel that serves an audience of three million followers. It is assumed that Hideo Kojima's Radioverse is one of the "experimental" new projects teased by Kojima back in January. It is unknown, (and highly unlikely) that the podcast will be translated into English, at least in any official capacity.

For now, if you wanted to wander around the mind of Hideo Kojima, then you'll have to do so within Kojima Production's dystopian adventure game, Death Stranding: Director's Cut, which is now available on PlayStation and PC platforms.

....

I should launch a podcast...

Hey, listen! Destructoid articles now have audio versions https://www.destructoid.com/hey-listen-destructoid-articles-now-have-audio-versions/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=hey-listen-destructoid-articles-now-have-audio-versions https://www.destructoid.com/hey-listen-destructoid-articles-now-have-audio-versions/#respond Thu, 29 Apr 2021 19:00:00 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/hey-listen-destructoid-articles-now-have-audio-versions/

Settle in for a curated selection of narrated Destructoid stories

If you've poked around Destructoid's original features section lately, you might've noticed something new — a curious little embedded audio clip at the top of certain articles where there wasn't one before.

Wait, when did that happen? Just recently! It's a still-fresh experiment.

For this test run, we tapped Dan Vincent and Josh Picard to lend their voices to ten long-form Destructoid articles — some that you likely read when they were originally published, and some that you might've missed. We're talking Zelda's musical legacy, Rule of Rose's rat-on-a-stick, Diablo II: Resurrected's magic trick, and a glowing Portal 2 anniversary retrospective, among other recent topics.

For future narrations, we'll strive to have the recording available day-and-date when a new article first hits the site so that those who prefer to listen aren't left waiting around wondering what's up.

Although plenty of Destructoid readers still prefer to go through articles at their own pace — what's your WPM?! — we're considering these audio versions to be another option if and when you need it.

We're also aiming to build up a spiffy centralized playlist that you can throw on for an impromptu binge-fest when the mood strikes. Does anyone else stock up for long commutes, busy-work afternoons, and Monster Hunter "desire sensor" grinds? Come to think of it, I used to listen to podcasts at the gym...

There's something funny about a site with a robot mascot using humans, not AI, to speak.

Podtoid 470

Well, here we are. Two and a half years ago, I got the crazy idea to bring back Podtoid after Steven Hansen left us to go join the Red Army. It would be a lot of work and I wasn't even sure it would be good or not. But I got Chris Moyse, Dan Roemer, and Occams to sign on, helping me revive the show nearly two years ago to the day. The first show wasn't so hot, but we got better, added Charlotte to the cast, and figured out a way to create some truly wonderful episodes in the weeks and months that followed.

As much as I've enjoyed the past two years, all good things must come to an end and today, this version of Podtoid takes its last bow before exiting stage right. On the show, the whole crew is here to look back at the great things from 2020 and some of the not-so-great things as well. We talk games, movies, books, and more as we say goodbye to this godforsaken year. Also, Moyse's Simpsons knowledge is put to the test with a trivia quiz. All that and more on Podtoid Episode 470.

You can download this episode and all the rest on iTunes, Google Play, Podbean, and Spotify. Most of our episodes are also available on YouTube as well as here on Destructoid.

We say it in the show, but thank you to every listener who gave us a chance these past two years. I hope in the nearly 100 episodes we did, we were able to bring a smile to your face.

But this week, the community came through with so many great questions that we had to super-size this episode of Podtoid to answer as many as we could. Want to know our thoughts on games from 2020, what we'll do when COVID is over, licensed titles, and more? Then sit back and chillax all cool with Podtoid Episode 469.

With so many popular video game franchises staying true to course, it's refreshing to see when a publisher lets a developer go wild with their ideas. The Yakuza series is long known for its brawler gameplay, but in Like a Dragon, it shifts things up with an RPG formula that really works well for the series.

That's just one of the topics on this episode of Podtoid. Chris, CJ, Dan and Occams gather around the proverbial fire to talk Yakuza, Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War, the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, the Game Award nominations, and IOI's 007 game. All that, plus a comedy of errors for one street racer, on Podtoid Episode 468.

There are many great autumn traditions we celebrate in this country. Pumpkin-spiced everything, Thanksgiving, radio stations playing Christmas music way too damn early, but my favorite tradition is taking time to watch the newest "Treehouse of Horror" episode on The Simpsons. Are they are good as they used to be? Nah, but they're still usually better than the rest of the season.

Podtoid 464

We're just weeks away from a new console generation and with it will come more beautifully imagined and realized worlds that will only be possible with better hardware. But as we've seen over the past few years, our current consoles are still powering some of the most jaw-dropping titles ever created. The PlayStation 4 in particular has been killing it with gorgeous games like The Last of Us: Part II, God of War, and Ghost of Tsushima, the latter of which just might be the most beautiful game found on the hardware.

That's just one of the topics of conversation for this episode of Podtoid. CJ, Chris, and Charlotte are on hand to talk open-world games, Just Dance, Street Fighter V, stupid ads in sports games, and measuring consoles in cats. It's no secret that Marvel's Avengers isn't in the best of places right now. Yes, it sold big in September, enough to top Super Mario 3D All-Stars as the month's top title on the NPD charts, but it's struggling, and with new consoles and several massive titles on the horizon, things are not going to get easier for Crystal Dynamics. But just because it's down now doesn't mean it's out. As we've seen with No Man's Sky, developers can pull their games back from the brink.

That's just one of the topics on this episode of Podtoid. CJ, Charlotte, Occams, and Dan chat about Marvel's Avengers, Ring Fit Adventure, Dragon Quest Tact, and Spooky Encounters. All that, plus you shouldn't rap about real crimes you're committing, on Podtoid Episode 463.

Podtoid 462

Fighting game rosters are always fascinating to me. For an industry where fans are always demanding "new, new, new," it's the one genre where old is good. Old characters, old stages, people just want to see everything they're already familiar with plus a couple of new additions to separate the new entry from the old one.

Not every character can be in every entry, and as we've seen in the past with multiple fighting games, those missing favorites can cause an uproar amongst the fanbase. And with social media, that uproar is louder and more annoying than ever. But I get it. Milenna is a great kharacter with a great backstory and mouth so big it makes Steven Tyler's lips look like Betty Boop's.

Podtoid 460

While Podtoid is and will always be a podcast about gaming, sometimes the crew just likes to chat about movies. And when it's only Chris, Occams, and CJ on the show, you can be sure those movies will be from the '80s. On this week's show, the boys talk about the rise and fall of Cannon Films, horror flicks, Spellbreak, and the big Bethesda purchase. All that, plus pumpkin spice flavors where they don't belong, on Podtoid Episode 460.

If you don't have time to listen now, you can always subscribe on iTunes, Google Play, Podbean, and Spotify. You can also check us out on YouTube.

Have you ever forgotten how to play a video game? https://www.destructoid.com/have-you-ever-forgotten-how-to-play-a-video-game/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=have-you-ever-forgotten-how-to-play-a-video-game https://www.destructoid.com/have-you-ever-forgotten-how-to-play-a-video-game/#respond Sat, 26 Sep 2020 16:00:00 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/have-you-ever-forgotten-how-to-play-a-video-game/

Podtoid 459

A few years ago, I was visiting my brother's family when my oldest nephew invited me to play a game of Madden. "Oh," I thought, "your father and I used to play this all the time." So I joined him for a game of football only to have him shut his PS4 off less than two quarters in as he had trounced me well enough to invoke the mercy rule. It turns out, when I don't play sports games, I completely forget how they work.

That's just one of the topics on this episode of Podtoid. CJ, Occams, Dan, and Charlotte talk forgetting games, WWE Battlegrounds, Final Fantasy X, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, Pathfinder: Kingmaker, and the PlayStation 5 date and price reveal. All that, plus even the trees are out to get you in Australia, on Podtoid Episode 459.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 is the exact trip down memory lane we needed in 2020 https://www.destructoid.com/tony-hawks-pro-skater-1-2-is-the-exact-trip-down-memory-lane-we-needed-in-2020/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=tony-hawks-pro-skater-1-2-is-the-exact-trip-down-memory-lane-we-needed-in-2020 https://www.destructoid.com/tony-hawks-pro-skater-1-2-is-the-exact-trip-down-memory-lane-we-needed-in-2020/#respond Sat, 19 Sep 2020 14:00:00 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/tony-hawks-pro-skater-1-2-is-the-exact-trip-down-memory-lane-we-needed-in-2020/

Podtoid 458

I would be lying if I said I haven't spent a good part of 2020 reminiscing about the better days of the past. Every week of this goddamn year has been too much, so why shouldn't I get lost thinking about the past and all the fun games of my youth. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater was one of the defining titles of teen years and with the recently released 1 + 2, it's taken me straight back to those weekends of Hot Pockets and Sunny-D.

That's just one of the topics we're covering on this episode of Podtoid. CJ, Chris, Occams, and Charlotte are on hand to talk about skateboarding memories, Oxenfree, Super Punch Patrol, the Xbox Series S, and Microsoft's lack of significant launch titles. All that, plus just because you play a doctor in movies doesn't mean you are one, on Podtoid Episode 458.

I can’t wait to play as Batgirl in Gotham Knights https://www.destructoid.com/i-cant-wait-to-play-as-batgirl-in-gotham-knights/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=i-cant-wait-to-play-as-batgirl-in-gotham-knights https://www.destructoid.com/i-cant-wait-to-play-as-batgirl-in-gotham-knights/#respond Sat, 29 Aug 2020 14:00:00 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/i-cant-wait-to-play-as-batgirl-in-gotham-knights/

Podtoid 456

DC FanDome was quite the fun showcase of all things DC Comics despite being just a glorified Zoom call. There were a lot of great trailers for upcoming movies, some exciting comic book news, and the reveals of what will hopefully be two awesome games. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League may have the pedigree behind it with its developer but Gotham Knights is giving something I've wanted for a very long time: a massive action-adventure game where I can play as my main squeeze Batgirl.

That's just one of the topics on this episode of Podtoid. Charlotte, Chris, Dan, CJ, and Occams are here to talk superhero games, The Batman, delicious snowfall, Bury Me, My Love, 13 Sentinels, and Fast & Furious: Crossroads. All that, plus CJ fails basic high school Spanish, in Podtoid Episode 456.

Podtoid 455

I imagine one of the most entertaining parts of building an epic video game is building up the world players will be exploring. There are many different ways to do this, and in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, you can find a lot of information about the inhabitants of this world the old-fashioned way: in a book. You can find out about the history of the land, as well as some saucier little details you might not expect.

That's just one of the topics on this episode of Podtoid. Charlotte, Dan, Occams, and CJ talk Skyrim, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, IKEA furniture, Epic's lawsuits, Galaxy of Terror, and the Xbox Series X launch. All that, plus you shouldn't point a gun at your dick, on Podtoid Episode 455.
