There are a variety of different types of Merchant spread across the islands of Palpagos. From Seeds to Ammo and everything between, there’s one who sells what you need. Here’s the rundown of all static Merchants, where to find them and what they sell.

Whether you’re running low on ammunition while flush with gold or you just fancy a new piece of headgear, there’s a Merchant in Palpagos somewhere who likely has what you’re looking for. They’re technically called ‘Wandering Merchants’, but in opposition to their name they do not move, so they’re easy to find when you need something or have stuff to sell.

Small Settlement Merchant

To find this Merchant, head to the Small Settlement just northwest of the starting location. Pass the level 30 PIDF Officer and run to the far end of the village. In the hut on the left-hand side, you’ll find this Merchant. He sells headpiece Schematics along with basic necessities for life in the wilderness.

Here’s everything you can get here, along with the price:

Duneshelter Merchants

You’ll need to level up a fair amount before you can realistically head to this settlement without being killed by the level 40-50 Pals in the surrounding area of Dessicated Desert. Once you’ve managed it, though, it’s well worth it.

There are two merchants in Duneshelter, both offering different wares for sale. The Wandering Merchant in the green coat offers a variety of Schematics and Ammunition, while the Merchant in the red coat offers items to help you and your Pals survive in the wilds of Palpagos.

If you’ve ventured here ill-equipped and you’re struggling with the climate of the Dessicated Desert, you’ll find armor here to suit both the daytime heat and the nighttime cold.

Here’s everything for sale from the Merchant in the green coat in Duneshelter:

Fisherman’s Point Merchants

You’ll find Fisherman’s Point on the Southern Coast of Mount Obsidian and just like the settlement in Duneshelter, you’ll need to get somewhere between level 40 and 50 to get here comfortably.

There are two Merchants here as well, in the same red and green coats. They sell similar items to those that can be purchased in Duneshelter, with different headpiece Schematics being up for grabs and Skill Fruits that you may have a hard time finding otherwise.

Just like with the Merchant in Duneshelter, you’ll find some armor here to prepare you for the heat of the Volcano nearby.

There is a Pal Merchant in a blue coat at all three of these locations as well. Their ‘stock’ of Pals changes each time you teleport into the area, though, so you’re just going to have to check in with them to see whether you can get any Pals to add to your Deck.

It’s not hard to see why Palworld players are obsessed with Depresso https://www.destructoid.com/its-not-hard-to-see-why-palworld-players-are-obsessed-with-depresso/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=its-not-hard-to-see-why-palworld-players-are-obsessed-with-depresso https://www.destructoid.com/its-not-hard-to-see-why-palworld-players-are-obsessed-with-depresso/#respond Sun, 28 Jan 2024 17:00:00 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=455424

There are 135 Pals in Palworld if you count all of the variants as separate Pals, but players are obsessing over just one of them. Depresso is the living embodiment of adult life, and players can’t get enough of his less-than-enthusiastic approach to life and responsibilities.

Why do people love Depresso?

Right from the moment you throw a ball at Depresso’s face and then proceed to force it into servitude at your base camp, the Pal’s demeanor just screams, “I don’t want to be here” and personally, I think that’s a feeling that everyone can relate to.

Whether it's mining at the breakneck speed of one hit every two seconds or relaxing face down in the spring, Depresso encapsulates the commonly experienced feelings of many of the 8 million players of Palworld - we don’t want to do what we’re doing, but we have to, so we’ll do it while distracting ourselves by counting the hours until we can go to sleep.

https://twitter.com/PalworldUpdates/status/1749985830217662801?s=20

On that note, Depresso also shares another thing in common with most people over the age of 18 - he’s addicted to caffeine. His partner skill is “Caffeine Inoculation” and comes with the following description:

“When activated, Depresso drinks a massive amount of energy drinks, causing its movement speed to increase.”

Now I don’t know about you, but as someone who performs best after more than one cup of morning coffee, I’ve never felt so seen by a video game.

https://twitter.com/murasakigezi/status/1750822135185211677?s=20

Don’t let Depresso’s resting bitch face mislead you, though. According to the Pal’s description within the Paldeck, while he might not have many friends because of the ‘grouchy look on its face’, Depresso is actually very kind-hearted and will happily feed stray Vixy when they’ve strayed too far from their pack.

I can’t help but relate to this little dude and I’m glad to say I’m not alone in feeling that way. Players all over social media, from Twitter to YouTube, are sharing their love for Depresso. The term “Depresso cured my depression” has become more popular than anyone could have predicted.

And yes, I may be a little biased on this because I have a huge amount of love for Depresso, I’m addicted to caffeine and I’ve been told that I, too, have a serious case of resting bitch face, but he’s inspired fan art and compilation videos that bring joy to all those who see them and moments of comedy within the game that can’t be rivaled. I mean look at his animation for relaxing in the spring.

https://twitter.com/DonKoala4/status/1749989595176210851?s=20

It’s not difficult to understand why this Pal has become so popular among players. He’s not only relatable but funny in that relatability. He doesn’t put up a front as many of us have to do on a daily basis and yet, he’s loved anyway. Isn’t that what we all want, at the end of the day?

Palworld gets a new roadmap, with PvP and Raid Bosses in the works https://www.destructoid.com/palworld-gets-a-new-roadmap-with-pvp-and-raid-bosses-in-the-works/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=palworld-gets-a-new-roadmap-with-pvp-and-raid-bosses-in-the-works https://www.destructoid.com/palworld-gets-a-new-roadmap-with-pvp-and-raid-bosses-in-the-works/#respond Wed, 24 Jan 2024 17:16:10 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=453972

With 6 million players and already proven popularity, Palworld players are expecting big things from Pocketpair. Our first glimpse of the Early Access roadmap for Palworld shows that the team is already working on even more content for the survival game.

Prior to the ridiculously successful launch of Palworld, Pocketpair promised a “one year roadmap” shortly after launch. Although this is more of a vague guideline of what’s to come, it gives a lot of hope for the future of Palworld.

At the top, Pocketpair confirms it's focusing on addressing "critical issues" with Palworld, prioritizing fixing those problems. This includes world date rollbacks and the loading screen persisting when trying to load into new worlds.

https://twitter.com/Palworld_EN/status/1750103684971987108

New Pals and areas to explore

Most importantly, at least in my opinion, the team at Pocketpair have promised the addition of new Pals to capture, though they’ve not given any hints as to how many will be added or how soon.

They’ve also said that they’re looking to add more islands, which means that we’re not going to be short of new places to explore any time soon.

PvP and battle content

One of the most exciting updates is the chance to pit our Pals against other players. With their arsenal of weapons and special abilities, it could be entertaining to watch them duke it out.

Pocketpair have been very vocal about their desire to add PvP into the game and on Steam, they state that they’re already “testing PvP internally”, so this addition seems like may be coming sooner rather than later.

They’re also looking to put Raid Bosses into the game, which will likely require multiple people in order to complete. There’s no word on how this will work yet.

Steam - Xbox Crossplay

Right now, players on Xbox cannot play with those who purchased the game on Steam, but that looks to be changing some time soon. That should make it easier for people across different platforms, including those on PC via Game Pass, to all party up.

In the same realm of updates, they’re also planning on implementing Server Transfers and Migration.

Pal trading

Pocketpair didn’t go into this too specifically, so we’re unsure whether you’ll need to be on the same server in order to exchange Pals to further your Pal Deck completion endeavors. But this should hopefully let you share around the captures, rather than keep them all to yourself.

Building systems updates

Again, we weren’t given any specifics about what these updates would actually be, but here’s hoping that the roof building gets just a little bit less convoluted. On top of this, Pocketpair are also hoping to add more buildings and elements which play into the survival aspect of the game.

Steam Workshop support

With the controversy surrounding the recently cancelled Pokémon mod, there definitely seems to be interest in adding onto the foundation of Palworld. So it’s no surprise to see that Pocketpair will be allowing Steam Workshop support for the modders within the now rather large community of players.

Updates to Pal AI

I cannot reasonably write this part without mentioning my biggest complaint about the game - Pals have absolutely no idea how to organize anything and it drives me mad.

Within the Roadmap, Pocketpair have said they’re going to be working on improvements to Pal AI. Whether this improvement will be to organization, preventing them from getting stuck inside of rocks (how do they always manage to do this?) or preventing the situation where my Lifmunk is trying to juggle 20 pieces of rock and failing miserably. Either way, I for one am looking forward to this particular update.

No dates were given for when these updates on the Palworld roadmap will start to arrive.

Palworld is missing one pretty big core feature: Photo mode https://www.destructoid.com/palworld-is-missing-one-pretty-big-core-feature-photo-mode/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=palworld-is-missing-one-pretty-big-core-feature-photo-mode https://www.destructoid.com/palworld-is-missing-one-pretty-big-core-feature-photo-mode/#respond Sat, 20 Jan 2024 15:10:29 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=452266

Pocketpair's Palworld is a very pretty game with adorable creatures and hilarious moments that provide no end of fun for players. However, they’ve left out something that many Palworld players think would improve their gameplay experience - Photo mode.

Within the first day of playing, I racked up 11 hours of adventure with my Pals and shared a lot of screenshots of my progress. I’m not alone, either. Over a million players joined the game within the first eight hours of the Beta being released and many of them are saying the same thing — why no photo mode?

Palworld desperately needs a photo mode

With seemingly endless wild areas to explore across a huge map with stunning scenery, it’s infuriating to try and take screenshots only to have the UI blocking half of the view. Take, for instance, this screenshot I took of this Desolate Church:

Screenshot by Destructoid

It’s beautiful, true, but wouldn’t it just be so much better without the Tutorial and menu infiltrating the vista?

It’s not just the scenery that I’d love to take photos of, either. At one point, my Eikthyrdeer started complaining that he was hungry, and I couldn’t figure out why. There was plenty of food available, it wasn’t blocked and he wasn’t injured. But then I found him. Stuck in a tree:

Screenshot by Destructoid

It’s not just the UI itself that’s bothersome when trying to take photos, it’s the sheer amount of UI. Everything piles on top of each other to create what feels like a very cluttered and claustrophobic screen.

As I said, I’m not alone in dreaming of UI-free pictures of my Pals and the world around me on the Palapagos. Players on the Community Forum of Steam are practically begging for it too.

The good news is that the game is in the very early stage of Beta, meaning that there’s no telling what could be added to the game over the coming months. Hopefully, seeing so many players asking for this feature will spur Pocketpair into implementing it. I’m sure that if we do, there will be a lot of stunning in-game shots coming our way in the future.

FFXIV’s Labyrinthos Grape Lamppost pays humorous tribute to beloved low-poly grapes https://www.destructoid.com/ffxiv-labyrinthos-grape-lamppost-pays-low-poly-grape-tribute/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=ffxiv-labyrinthos-grape-lamppost-pays-low-poly-grape-tribute https://www.destructoid.com/ffxiv-labyrinthos-grape-lamppost-pays-low-poly-grape-tribute/#respond Thu, 18 Jan 2024 16:49:35 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=451281

Final Fantasy XIV has spurred plenty of memes over the years, though none seem to be as beloved to the community as the low-poly Grapes of Endwalker. Now, in Patch 6.55, you can have your own low-poly Grape tribute through a new lamppost furnishing.

Where did the low-poly grape meme come from?

For a time after the initial release of Endwalker in December 2021, the grapes found in Labyrinthos became a source of player amusement because of their low-poly, blocky appearance. Although these grapes were soon updated, and their appearance brought more in line with the standard we know and love FFXIV for, the meme persevered.

With Patch 6.01, FFXIV developers explained that the low-poly appearance of the grapes was intended to alleviate system memory within the area, before going on to say that the appearance had been altered to bring the appearance of the infamous grapes more in line with those we’d previously seen in the Crystarium.

Even two years after the short-lived event, the development team cheekily acknowledged it with one of the items given away at Fan Festival events in 2023-2024. Included in the package of goodies was a low-poly grape squishy.

The Labyrinthos Grape Lamppost

Screenshot by Destructoid

Now, the team has immortalized this meme once again with the inclusion of a new outdoor furnishing item in Patch 6.55. The full description reads:

“Seeking to make grapes more transportable, a researcher at Meryall Agronomics is rumored to have produced a variety that grew in blocky clusters. Although complaints that they looked unappetizing led to a new strain with rounder edges, the original was regarded fondly by some, and so it was immortalized in the form of this lamppost.”

How to get the Labyrinthos Grape Lamppost

Screenshot by Destructoid

As it’s a craftable item, you can get the lamppost by either crafting it yourself or purchasing it on the Marketboard. Of course the price to purchase it will vary significantly depending on which server you play on, but on Goblin (Crystal) it’s currently selling for around 30,000 Gil.

If you’d rather craft it yourself, your alchemist will need to be at level 90 and meet the recommended Craftsmanship of 2805. The ingredients needed for the recipe are relatively easy to source, as you can either gather them yourself or buy them cheaply enough on the Marketboard.

Here’s the full list of ingredients:

  • 5 Berkanan Sap
  • 4 Shroud Seedling
  • 4 Growth Formula Kappa
  • 1 Glade Pendant Lamp
  • 32 Water Crystals
  • 32 Lightning Crystals

Final Fantasy XI returns to FFXIV this month with Vana’diel inspired glamour https://www.destructoid.com/final-fantasy-xi-returns-to-ffxiv-this-month-with-vanadiel-inspired-glamour/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=final-fantasy-xi-returns-to-ffxiv-this-month-with-vanadiel-inspired-glamour https://www.destructoid.com/final-fantasy-xi-returns-to-ffxiv-this-month-with-vanadiel-inspired-glamour/#respond Wed, 17 Jan 2024 15:29:52 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=450644

The Maiden’s Rhapsody is returning to Final Fantasy XIV for the fifth time on January 22, and once again, players have a chance to get their hands on some pretty sweet glamor pieces.

The Maiden’s Rhapsody is an FFXIV event celebrating the final chapter of FFXI, Rhapsodies of Vana’diel. With the theme of the upcoming Dawntrail Alliance Raid series being “Echoes of Vana’diel”, it makes sense to bring this event back for a fifth time this year, despite the fact that its last previous appearance was only in 2022.

During the event, you accompany Remumu, a reporter from the Harbor Herald, while fighting through a series of four event FATEs. Throughout the story, you’ll meet Iroha, the main heroine of the Rhapsodies of Vana’diel in FFXI, helping to restore her memory of the past.

The Maiden’s Rhapsody event runs from January 22 at 8 am GMT/12 am PST until February, ending on February 5 at 1:59 pm GMT/6:59 am PST.

To begin the quest, head to Limsa Lominsa Upper Decks and speak to Remumu (X11.6 Y11.2) to pick up the starting quest “A Journey to Remember”

The Amatsu set

Screenshot by Destructoid

If you happen to like what Iroha is wearing during the event, then you'll be happy to know that's exactly what you get as a reward for completing it!

By taking part in the event and completing the associated FATEs, you’ll get your hands on the Amatsu set. They’re level one glamor items and while sadly undyeable, they do look pretty good when mixed with pieces from other sets.

For players who began the quest in one of its previous appearances but never got to complete it, you can pick up where you left off and get your hands on the glamor pieces this time around.

If you’ve already played through the events of The Maiden’s Rhapsody before, you can still take part in the FATEs and enjoy the storyline all over again by using the Seasonal Event Replay feature. Just talk to Remumu as you would if you were taking part for the first time and enjoy the events!

Naoki Yoshida suggests it might be time for the younger generation to take on Final Fantasy XVII https://www.destructoid.com/naoki-yoshida-final-fantasy-younger-generation-news/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=naoki-yoshida-final-fantasy-younger-generation-news https://www.destructoid.com/naoki-yoshida-final-fantasy-younger-generation-news/#respond Tue, 16 Jan 2024 16:20:58 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=449697

During an interview with Square Enix's Naoki Yoshida, the Final Fantasy XIV director and XVI producer has revealed that he thinks it might be better for a younger generation of developers to pick up the mantle and work on Final Fantasy XVII

While Final Fantasy fans have become very fond of Naoki Yoshida through his work on both FF XIV and XVI, he has implied that while the team at Square Enix have made no decision about a director for the next title in the series.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGh7Ti0b_bY

In the Game Maker's Notebox interview with Sony's Shuhei Yoshida, which can be viewed in its entirety here, Naoki Yoshida said:

"For the moment, I'll just say that nothing has been decided yet. That said, if I had to say something about that... I've had the chance to work on two of these, XIV and XVI, so maybe it's time for someone new, you know. Instead of having the same old guys handle the next one.”

Yoshida went on to state his reasoning, saying that a younger generation would be able to make a new Final Fantasy title with challenges that "suit today’s world."

It will likely be a long time before we hear any concrete news about Final Fantasy XVII, but Square Enix is busy working on both Final Fantasy XIV, with Dawntrail coming this summer, and Final Fantasy XVI, with a new story-based DLC in the works and the PC version coming at some point.

An Arcade Full of Cats is a hidden gem of the cat-finding sub-genre https://www.destructoid.com/an-arcade-full-of-cats-is-a-hidden-gem-of-the-cat-finding-sub-genre/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=an-arcade-full-of-cats-is-a-hidden-gem-of-the-cat-finding-sub-genre https://www.destructoid.com/an-arcade-full-of-cats-is-a-hidden-gem-of-the-cat-finding-sub-genre/#respond Sun, 14 Jan 2024 18:00:00 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=449047

Hidden Object games are popular, easy, and relaxing. Within the genre, there’s a really specific sub-genre that I’ve recently found myself enjoying maybe a little too much — hidden cat games. And I think I’ve found the best one out there, especially for those who grew up gaming.

An Arcade Full of Cats

Image via DevCats

An Arcade Full of Cats is a free-to-play game developed by DevCats that revolves around a suspiciously ‘Back to the Future’ looking pair of cats called Fofiño and Leo. In order to make the world a better place for cats (and humans), they go back in time to inject more cats into our most beloved arcade games. There is no combat, no time restrictions and nothing more taxing than… Finding cats. I know, it sounds bizarre at best, but it’s more than that.

While hunting down these adorable little feline friends, you’re thrown into a pit of nostalgia that’s filled with references to video games and movies over the last thirty years - from Mario’s question mark block to iconic Zelda imagery to movie posters with incredible cat-related puns (Expurrminator, anyone?). I was both reminded of how old I actually am and left yearning for the simpler times of video gaming.

There are five levels in the base game, one based every five years between 1980 and 2000. The arcade location is the same, but the decor slightly changes with each jump forward in time, with the pieces from the previous level relegated to storage behind the arcade machines. The arcade machines themselves change to reflect those which could be found in arcades around the world at the time, with popular games receiving a cat-themed pun name.

Screenshot by Destructoid

Once you’ve completed the base game, you can download the DLC and find cats in a variety of time periods from the 1800s right back to prehistoric times. The DLC cost me £1.35 and that money goes straight towards helping Cats, according to the developers.

Now while I do love Cats, I love nostalgia just that little bit more. There’s nothing like remembering a simpler time when I’d take the money I earned doing chores and run straight to the arcade. I spent far longer looking for all the references in each image than I did actually finding Cats. Of course the nostalgia was lessened when it came to historic time periods because while the game has reminded me that I am getting old, I’m not that old.

How it works

Image via DevCats

In every level, there are a select number of cats to find and a smaller number of “hidden cats” to find. Of course, you could argue that all of the cats are hidden, but the hidden cats are located in places where you can’t see them at first glance - in bags, under hats, in trash cans, and in one instance, inside an arcade machine itself. There is even one notable hidden ‘Mario’ cat which requires an old-school cheat code to find.

There’s also a secondary level within each main level which you can access when you find the hidden coin on the main screen of said level. I know that’s a mouthful but bear with me.

Screenshot by Destructoid

The secondary puzzle isn’t any more challenging than the first, but it does offer a nice chance to look for something other than cats when you start seeing cats every time you blink. My favorite secondary puzzle is Purr-purr-boy, during which you need to help a Paperboy find his papers. Turns out he’s a terrible shot, which is reminiscent of my own attempts to complete the old game this one is based on.

While there is a certain level of challenge to the game, it's not particularly difficult and that means you can actually relax while playing - something which we all need from time to time now that we’ve grown up and no longer spend our weekends wasting our allowance on arcade machines.

Other similar games

I’ll admit that I went down a bit of a wormhole after playing An Arcade full of Cats and it turns out that there are a surprising number of hidden cat games out there. Like I said, I went down a wormhole and I’ve played all of the ones currently on offer, with upcoming additions to the list going straight on my Steam wishlist. You could say that curiosity got the better of me, but thankfully I am not a Cat.

From DevCats, the developers behind An Arcade Full of Cats, the other titles on offer are:

  • A Castle Full of Cats
  • A Building Full of Cats

There are two other titles being added to their repertoire in the next few months, as well:

  • A Park Full of Cats
  • A Tower Full of Cats

Are they all, arguably, the same thing? Yes. However, each game has its own theme and story, which proves to keep them interesting. For instance, A Castle Full of Cats has a Horror theme, which appealed to the Horror nerd in me while featuring recreations of popular cat memes.

If you love cats, or you love Hidden Object games, you'll love this one. If you love both Cats and Hidden Object games, you're in for a treat. Considering it's free to play, An Arcade Full of Cats offers a surprising amount of feel-good for nothing and I think it is the purr-fect way to unwind after a long day.

Sims 4 Castle Estate Kit leaks on the EA app https://www.destructoid.com/sims-4-castle-estate-kit-leaks-on-the-ea-app/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=sims-4-castle-estate-kit-leaks-on-the-ea-app https://www.destructoid.com/sims-4-castle-estate-kit-leaks-on-the-ea-app/#respond Sat, 13 Jan 2024 17:00:00 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=449282

In May 2023, players of Sims 4 were invited to vote on what they wanted to add to the game. The winners were a castle-themed item pack and a Gothic-themed clothing pack. Thanks to Sims Community, we’ve got our first glimpse of one of them — the Castle Estate Kit!

The Sims community are not rookies when it comes to leaks - for almost every Pack or Expansion, there seems to be some kind of leaked information shortly before they’re released. Now, not even two weeks into 2024, we’ve received the first leak of the year with information about the first Pack.

Have you struggled to create your own Gothic-themed estate with what’s currently included in the game and DLC packs? Are you dreaming of a castle with arrow slits, parapets and leaded windows? Well, if this leak is accurate, you won’t have to wait long to live out your Gothic dreams.

When to expect the Castle Estate Kit

Screenshot via The Sims Community

Well, if you believe the date that featured within the leak before EA removed it from their app, the Castle Estate Kit will be coming in October 2099.

Now, while The Sims 4 has lasted longer than any Sims game before it, even EA is likely to be planning DLC content that far ahead. The 2099 date is almost certainly just a placeholder, so don’t worry, you’re unlikely to have to wait 75 years in order to build the Medieval home of your dreams.

According to the official Sims 4 roadmap for January to April, there are “two highly anticipated kits” coming between now and April - presumably, this leaked Kit is one of those two, and the Gothic fashion Kit will be the other.

What’s in the Kit?

Image via EA

The exact content included in the pack remains a mystery as of yet, but some players have been able to dissect the images that were included in the leak. The line-up seems to be more of the usual suspects - doors, windows, wall & floor decor, and other items to help build up your very own estate.

Here’s the complete description for the kit, as it was when the leak was still live on the EA app:

“Capture the classic grandeur of a castle with The Sims 4 Castle Estate Kit. This community-voted collection features stone walls, leaded glass, and everything you need to create the perfect dramatic backdrop for your next story.

Build Something Grand – Get inspired by the majesty of castles and build gothic arches, stackable ornate windows, grand staircases, gorgeous stonework, and a large portcullis gate. It’s all about the gravitas.

Gotta Love a Classic – Parapets, stained glass, arrow slits and even a gargoyle are among the classical details that will make your manor magnificent.”

Portal: Revolution is a free fan-made mod that’s picking up steam https://www.destructoid.com/portal-revolution-releases-for-free-on-steam-fan-made-mod/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=portal-revolution-releases-for-free-on-steam-fan-made-mod https://www.destructoid.com/portal-revolution-releases-for-free-on-steam-fan-made-mod/#respond Tue, 09 Jan 2024 21:45:37 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=447683 Portal Revolution

Portal 2 was released in 2011 to widespread acclaim. Now, 22 years later, there’s a free fan-made mod called Portal: Revolution that perfectly re-captures the joy of the game, albeit with the sad omission of a much-loved character.

Released on January 6 2024, Portal: Revolution—developed by Second Face Software—has received positive reviews on Steam. Over 3,000 people have reviewed the mod at the time of this writing, and 94% of those are positive.

One of the reviewers on Steam likened it to the scene in Ratatouille where the chef eats something made by the rat and has a flashback to a heartwarming childhood memory. They’re right, too.

Image via Second Face Software

The game add-on offers eight hours of exclusive gameplay, voice acting that perfectly captures the humor of the original game and challenging levels to work through. Promising to pick up in terms of difficulty where the original Portal 2 left off, there really is some challenge to work through.

Sadly, the add-on takes place after the demise of GLaDOS, so we’re without her dark sense of humor. But with so much on offer, we can’t hold that against the developers.

As well as taking the difficulty of puzzles up a notch, the developers have also introduced some new elements to gameplay. There’s a new variant of laser cube and field that cleanses gel. Second Face Software have also resurrected a feature that was removed during development of the original Portal 2: "Pneumatic Diversity Vents."

Portal: Revolution is available now on Steam for free and you can play it as long as you have a copy of Portal 2 downloaded to your steam account.

FFXIV fans are already imagining Pictomancer as a chaotic paint gremlin https://www.destructoid.com/ffxiv-fans-are-already-imagining-pictomancer-as-a-chaotic-paint-gremlin/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=ffxiv-fans-are-already-imagining-pictomancer-as-a-chaotic-paint-gremlin https://www.destructoid.com/ffxiv-fans-are-already-imagining-pictomancer-as-a-chaotic-paint-gremlin/#respond Mon, 08 Jan 2024 22:49:23 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=447277

As soon as Final Fantasy XIV's new Pictomancer job was revealed during Tokyo Fan Festival, Eorzeans across social media immediately utilized their own artistic talents to honor the game's next magic user. No announcement would be complete without its fair share of memes, so here's a few of the finest we've found.

For those out of the loop, Pictomancer is the second job announced for FFXIV's upcoming Dawntrail expansion. Seemingly based on Final Fantasy 6's Relm Arrowny, the new footage of the game showed how the Pictomancer will use the power of art to inflict damage. So, naturally, Pictomancer garnered a plethora of memes exploring the implications of life as a full-time artist. These range from wholesome homages to Bob Ross to... decidedly less wholesome ideas.

So what does Twitter have to say?

Rather than focusing on the whimsy and fun that looks to be coming with Pictomancer, @arcteris decided to instead dwell on what might be possible on the darker side of creation.

https://twitter.com/arcteris_/status/1744059820443893907

While some users chose to focus on the skills that might be coming, others decided to imagine what this could mean for their ships between the Warrior of Light (WoL) and the various Scions.

Anyone with children will tell you that giving paint to a child may as well be seen as giving them a snack. Lets just hope its non-toxic.

https://twitter.com/veriitasu/status/1743822005848121451

No FFXIV announcement would be complete without an Eggroller comic. As always, their addition to the meme pile does not disappoint.

https://twitter.com/The_Eggroller/status/1743869917227610144

In what is possibly the most accurate meme of all, @Memai333 suggests that the LB3 will be a hastily scrawled plea for mercy.

https://twitter.com/memai333/status/1744073261753733584

Its a well known trope that artists will work for exposure. Knowing this, the Twitter-sphere is alight with suggestions that Pictomancer will too.

https://twitter.com/NiaYurina/status/1744022976369148333

There was no way that Pictomancer could be announced while avoiding Bob Ross memes. Fans on Twitter did not disappoint with their contributions.

https://twitter.com/WallinGaming/status/1744074140896649560

Possibly my favorite of them all, this addition from @MrDarkstar88 will either prove to be a dark piece of foreshadowing or more of a joke with time and experience.

Elsa Japan x Final Fantasy XIV PCs explained

There are two color options for the PC - Light and Dark. Both varieties feature exclusive artwork of Zodiark and Hydaelyn on either side, as well as Hydaelyn’s quote “Follow your light” in Japanese on the front of the Unit. Whichever version you choose, the LED lighting within the rig is fully customizable.

There are three levels on offer in total; Entry, Standard and High-End. The good news is that even the Entry level rig will easily cover the minimum requirements to handle the Graphical Update coming in Dawntrail, while the High-end version far exceeds them.

The bad news for those who want to get their hands on it is they're only shipped within Japan by Elsa themselves, sadly. However, if you’re lucky enough to have a way around this roadblock, these units are available for Pre-Order now.

Orders placed before February 1 are set to be shipped in early March, while any orders after this date currently do not have an estimated time for shipping. The units will be on sale until June 30, 2024.

Orders are limited to one unit per model per person, and sales are on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Catch up before Dawntrail, Final Fantasy XIV Complete Edition is half price until January 17 https://www.destructoid.com/dawntrail-final-fantasy-xiv-complete-edition-half-price-until-january-17/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=dawntrail-final-fantasy-xiv-complete-edition-half-price-until-january-17 https://www.destructoid.com/dawntrail-final-fantasy-xiv-complete-edition-half-price-until-january-17/#respond Thu, 04 Jan 2024 16:45:49 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=446024

We’ve all got that one friend that we’d love to drag into the world of Eorzea, and now is the best time to do just that - Final Fantasy XIV and its Endwalker expansion are 50% off until January 17.

What’s on sale?

Image via Square Enix

The Tokyo Fan Festival is happening this weekend, and, in celebration, Square Enix is holding a massive 50% off sale on some Final Fantasy XIV editions, including Endwalker. This is the biggest discount you'll likely see for a while, so if there’s someone in your life who you know would love Eorzea as much as you do, or even if you simply want another copy for a different platform, now’s the time to bite.

With Dawntrail on the horizon and Patch 6.55 set to drop in the next few weeks, there’s even more content and reasons to dive into Eorzea for the first time or revisit old friends.

Here’s the full list of options and their prices:

Title USD GPB
Final Fantasy XIV Online - Complete Edition 29.99 17.49
Final Fantasy XIV Online - Complete Collector’s Edition 69.99 42.49
Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker 19.99 14.99
Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker Collector’s Edition 29.99 22.49

Does the sale include Steam?

Unfortunately, the discount has not reached Steam as of yet, and there was no mention of a Steam sale in the Lodestone post. Historically, though, Steam sales for FFXIV generally happen a short while after the Square Enix sale ends. For now, that's not confirmed, so we’ll just have to wait and pray the sale returns (...to the waking sands.)

Purchase methods

There are a few ways to purchase, depending on your platform of choice. For PC players, simply head over to the Square Enix Store or Mogstation to buy. PlayStation players, whether playing on a PS4 or PS5, will have to visit the PlayStation Store in order to purchase.

As mentioned, the end of this sale period is set for January 17, although the exact end time will vary depending on where you are in the world.
