Best Chongyun Builds, Weapons, and Teams in Genshin Impact

I hope you brought extra popsicles.

Chongyun is a 4-star Cryo Claymore character in Genshin Impact. His ability to infuse teammates’ Normal Attacks with Cryo gives him a unique niche in Genshin Impact teams. Here are Chongyun’s best weapons, artifacts, and teams.

Chongyun’s Skill deals Cryo damage and creates a circle on the field. When standing within this circle, any character’s melee attacks become infused with Cryo. Chongyun is the only character with the ability to turn any melee teammate into a Cryo DPS, enabling some unique Freeze, mono Cryo, and Melt teams.

His Burst deals three hits of damage and applies Cryo with each hit, allowing him to Melt all of his damage. Realistically though, most teams will use his Burst as a means to trigger the team buff from the 4pc Noblesse Oblige artifact set.

Use Chongyun’s Burst and Skill, then swap to another teammate to deal damage with Cryo-infused Normal Attacks. Chongyun himself is not recommended as an on-field DPS due to his weak Normal Attacks and his tendency to break Frozen enemies.

Weapons

Wolf’s Gravestone
This standard 5-star weapon improves Chongyun’s personal damage and allows him to buff his teammates’ ATK. The buff has inconsistent uptime, but it’s still one of the best options for Chongyun.

Sacrificial Greatsword
This 4-star Claymore allows Chongyun to immediately end his Skill’s cooldown. Casting his Skill twice in quick succession allows him to proc his Ascension 4 passive immediately, decreasing enemies’ Cryo RES. Alternatively, you can delay casting his second Skill in order to maintain greater uptime on his Cryo infusion. Though some of the options below result in higher personal damage for Chongyun, Sacrificial Greatsword is recommended because of its utility.

Beacon of the Reed Sea / Serpent Spine
These premium weapons seek to maximize Chongyun’s personal damage. Use them if you have them, but other characters may make better use of these powerful weapons.

Akuoumaru / Lithic Blade / Luxurious Sea-Lord
These are the more accessible 4-star options if you don’t have any of the above. They are all decent for Chongyun’s personal damage, though Lithic Blade is only recommended with at least one other teammate from Liyue.

Artifacts

4pc Noblesse Oblige (4NO)
4NO allows Chongyun to buff his team’s ATK when he uses his Burst. This is the generally recommended set for most Chongyun teams.

2pc combos
2pc combos that provide ATK, Energy Recharge, Cryo DMG, and Burst DMG are all viable. Elemental Mastery is also an option for Melt teams. 2pc combos are often better than 4NO for Chongyun’s personal damage, but 4NO remains the recommended set for overall team damage.

Cryo DMGCRIT Rate/DMG

Chongyun can require anywhere from 100% to 180% Energy Recharge depending on his team. More Cryo teammates and longer rotations will lower the amount of Energy Recharge you need. If equipping Sacrificial Greatsword, you often won’t need to build any additional Energy Recharge at all.

The rest of Chongyun’s stats can focus on CRIT, ATK, and Elemental Mastery (if Melt). Build him like a typical DPS.

Teams

Freeze

Chongyun enables unique Freeze teams that allow any character to be an on-field Cryo DPS. This is typically Kaeya, but Rosaria and Shenhe can also do well in this role. Add a Hydro unit to enable Freeze. An Anemo unit is optional, but will help provide crowd-control and reduce enemy RES using the 4pc Viridescent Venerer artifact set. Alternatively, you can opt for a healer or shielder if you need some defensive utility. Here are some example teams to try:

  • Chongyun – Kaeya/Rosaria/Shenhe – Hydro – flex
  • Chongyun – Kaeya – XingqiuYelan

Mono Cryo

Mono Cryo teams are basically just Freeze teams with no Hydro. Shenhe and Kazuha are not technically required, but highly recommended. If you don’t have them, feel free to substitute any Cryo and Anemo unit.

  • Chongyun – Shenhe – Kazuha – Layla/flex

Melt

Melt teams feature at least one Pyro unit to enable Melts. Kaeya, Rosaria, and Shenhe still do well as the on-field Cryo DPS, but they should be built with more Elemental Mastery than in their Freeze or mono Cryo teams. Alternatively, you can Normal Attack with Xingqiu to trigger a mix of Freeze, Vaporize, and Melt.

  • Chongyun – Kaeya/Rosaria/Shenhe – Bennett – Kazuha/Xiangling
  • Chongyun – Xingqiu – Bennett – Xiangling
